part one of: “the girl with the broken smile”

i’ve been sitting on this gallery since august and being patient for the right time to circle back to it hasn’t been the easiest task. this concept is the fourth instillment of my harmonies in hues series (if you’re new here, check out my h.i.h story highlight to see what i’m talking about), and i know i say this every time...but this gallery truly is just as special to me as the others.

every time i listen to this song (she will be loved by maroon 5) i’m taken back to the very first time i heard it. i was 9 years old, sitting in my room, listening to pandora, when this song came on shuffle. i remember sitting there listening so intentionally to each word that was sung, feeling the gravity of the words coming out of adam’s mouth. he sang the words “look for the girl with the broken smile, ask her if she wants to stay a while, and she will be loved,” and i felt this sudden rush of emotions i hadn’t fully understood until that moment. to me, he sang “to be loved is to be seen, even in silence.” it was then that my perspective on love (platonic, romantic, and personal) was changed forever.

true love isn’t made up of the big and extravagant things you do, buy, or feel. true love comes in the thick and thin of life; the moments when words are worth less than a comforting presence, a shoulder to rely on, or knowing there is someone who sees and loves every part of ourselves (especially the parts that break us.) and while there is nothing wrong with expressing your love in big ways, to me, true love cannot be measured by the amount of money you spend, but by who see’s the depths of your soul and fills it with passion, comfort, and peace.

this gallery was different than the others, as i tried to pull more from the editorial side of photography. i needed the environment to be still, so erin and stanley’s love could shine through; i needed to see less of me, and more of what their love is and how could be displayed through the words of this song. definitely more to come with this gallery, but for now, i hope you all enjoy, “the girl with the broken smile: a harmonies in hues visual poetry series by moments by bray” ✨
