Things I don't do as a body affirming bo***ir photographer:
I don't celebrate or chastise weight loss. Your worth has never been determined by the number on a scale, and it's not my place to assign value to changes in your body.
I don't tell clients to "suck it in." You deserve to breathe. I'd MUCH rather photograph a your body as is vs you torturing your stomach.
I don't expect you to love every photo. That's normal! We're often our own toughest critics, and sometimes it takes a little time to see ourselves with kinder eyes. Plus, this is art. It's totally subjective!
I don't hide your insecurities. I won't photoshop or pose away your humanity. My job isn't to convince you that you're beautiful because I erased or hid the things you dislike. I'd like us to approach those things with neutrality. Maybe you end up liking them - maybe you don't, but at least you know your entire body is worth documenting.
I don't just talk the talk; I try to walk the walk. One way I practice body affirmations for myself is by not weighing myself. For me, stepping away from the scale has been one of the healthiest decisions I've ever made. It freed up so much mental space for things that actually matter.
Body affirmation isn't about pretending we love every inch of ourselves every single day. That's not possible for me, and I wouldn't expect my clients to do that either. I'd much rather you have a skillset to treat your body with respect and compassion, even on the really freaking hard days.
