This historically significant site originally served as a burial ground for early German and Irish immigrants and the founders of Trinity Lutheran Church. The year 1843 marked the arrival of a substantial group of immigrants seeking religious freedom, who subsequently established the City of Cedarburg. In 1844, they constructed their first log church near the intersection of Western Avenue and Evergreen Boulevard. The adjacent cemetery became one of the oldest Lutheran burial grounds in the state. However, the rocky terrain made digging graves extremely challenging, often requiring the use of blasting powder and taking days to complete. Consequently, burials in the original plot ceased in 1868, when a new site, Zur Ruhe Cemetery, was opened. Due to the deterioration of wooden and early stone markers, the congregation decided to remove individual headstones and erected a large shared stone monument, engraved with the names of the original 26 pioneers and church founders.
