Constructed in 1890, the Soo Line Depot is a historic brownstone station of significance. It was originally utilized by the Wisconsin Central and later the Soo Line Railroad, serving as the dynamic hub connecting the city to the Gogebic Iron Range and Lake Superior's ore docks. Today, this restored landmark functions as a museum dedicated to railroads. Featuring Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style, the imposing structure is built with brownstone quarried locally. The depot's role was vital in Ashland's development, as it facilitated substantial mineral and lumber freight while drawing thousands of tourists to the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded in 1888, the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway formally came into existence, earning the 'Soo' nickname due to the pronunciation of 'Sault'.

While exploring the interior, the pair constructed a crude "fort" of stakes and boughs at the foot of Chequamegon Bay, near the mouth of Fish Creek in modern-day Ashland. This is considered the first house and European outpost built in Wisconsin. Pierre-Esprit Radisson and Médard des Groseilliers were 17th-century French explorers who built some of the earliest crude forts in the Great Lakes and Hudson Bay. Their unauthorized fur trading trips and subsequent switch to English backing led directly to the founding of the Hudson's Bay Company.

The Sheboygan County Insane Asylum, located in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, began operating in 1940 as a comprehensive care facility and served for 62 years, catering to the mentally ill, developmentally disabled, elderly, and individuals struggling with addiction, ultimately closing in 2002. The institution's first iteration was in Winooski, established in 1876, but a fatal fire that killed four residents prompted its relocation to Sheboygan. The large brick complex, measuring 375,000 square feet, was constructed in 1939 and became operational in 1940, phasing out the older city facility. During the Second World War, the facility was temporarily taken over by the U.S. government and renamed Camp Sheboygan (1944-1945) to house German and Italian POWs who worked on nearby farms. By 1969, the facility focused on acute mental health and addiction services, but a dwindling patient population by the 1990s sealed its fate, leading to permanent closure in 2002.
