In 2020, the East Troublesome Fire burned over 190,000 acres, making it the largest wildfire in Colorado history. Four years later, in the Arapaho National Forest, the undergrowth and a few trees have grown up, though most of the trees remain carbonized trunks. Juxtaposed against the ochre and purple undergrowth and the gravel stream, I found the burned trees to be eerily compelling. Despite the regrowth, the extent of the drought-driven wildfire portends a long recovery for the forest ecosystem.
