This is an interesting clip captured on March 12th. It shows a behavior I have not witnessed in quite some time with Spot and her daughter, Cheeky.
I remember when Spot would swim to the end of the bulkhead, right next to where I was sitting, and remain almost perfectly still while seemingly scanning me. I could actually hear those scans, just as I can in this video.
But something has changed. This behavior hasn’t happened in months.
I cannot say for certain why, but I often wonder if it is because these dolphins have simply grown comfortable with my presence.
Many of you have suggested that these dolphins recognize me, but I have never had anything to compare my experiences to. It is just me out there, returning to the same place, observing the same dolphins over time.
Still, I cannot help but wonder if these early encounters offer a glimpse into how dolphins assess an unfamiliar presence and, perhaps, gradually come to accept it.
I am not claiming to have the answer, but the possibility that trust and familiarity can develop quietly over time is a beautiful thought.
