So I was just coming to the realization that I have yet to post myself on my page! so here I am, the girl behind the camera. for those of you I’ve yet to meet, hi! My name is Zoe Barnes and I am a photographer based in Rochester, NY. I love cameras, horses, and people. Something really important to me is kindness.
Recently in America I have not seen enough kindness. Last year was hard for everyone. You, me, and hundreds of millions of others have endured a chaotic year including a polarizing election season. Add to that the recent events in Washington D.C. and I realize that I have yet to speak out about what is really important. So many people tell me to not be political with my business, but at the end of the day what I want to say is not politics to me, but basic human rights that are not up for debate. There is no debate on whether or not people should be treated equally.
I was lucky enough to grow up with a family and community that accepted me for me. As an adopted Jewish Chinese girl I have faced the consequences of harmful stereotypes, but at the same time I have certain privileges others don’t.
I grew up speaking standardized english, never had to worry about having food on the table, and no matter who I chose/will choose to become I will have support from family and loved ones. I have never had to worry about getting stopped by the police without just cause and being left to fear for my life. I have never had to worry about people calling me a terrorist because i wear a hijab.
However, I am very obviously not white, and with the corona virus coming from china I often get harsh stares and dirty looks from people, as if I somehow caused it just because of my race. Being Jewish i grew up feeling out of place and having to miss school and social events because my school district does not recognize Jewish holidays, only Christian ones. As a woman, I'm constantly being exposed to sexism in many things I pursue and enjoy. I have had to go through a lot of things and work very hard to accomplish what I have. Privilege is real, and yesterday white privilege was so disgustingly illustrated for not just our country, but for the world to see.
I am lucky enough to be living in a time where change is possible, and I hope with the new generations we eventually extinguish every ounce of systemic racism, sexism, classism, anti-semitism and so much more. Within my own business and personal life, hate and inequality are not tolerated, and I believe in kindness and doing what is right. My morals, educating others, advocating, and being on the right side of history is more important to me than money or business will ever be. Staying silent is not an option, and speaking out personally is extremely important to me. Much love, Zoe.
