They say you never forget your first look at the Alhambra. For me, it’ll always be tied to the sound of a street guitar and the quiet joy of experiencing it with my daughter and her fiancé

A 10-hour layover, two luggage lockers, and a taxi ride to the peaks of Sintra. We traded rest for exploration, and it was a great decision!

Exploring Pena Palace felt like a dream. We spent hours wandering through the colors and carvings, with a few local queijadas to keep us going. Eventually, we had a wild tuk-tuk ride back to the center for a rustic meal at Tulhas with baked sheep cheese, apricot marmalade, and cod fish cakes. It was the perfect “welcome to Portugal” moment.

When I look at these photographs, I remember the joy in the adventure and making the most of every hour we had!

I’ve always been more comfortable observing the world than being the center of it. While my daughter and I traveled last month, I found myself reflecting on the small chances that shaped my life. Here are some fun facts and random thoughts on serendipity and the path that led me here

1. My jobs in college included helping in the darkroom and selling cameras. One taught me that the best moments can’t be rushed, and the other gave me the ability to pick up almost any camera, put it in manual, and start shooting

2. Living in a castle with other artists while studying photography in Ireland was pivotal. It’s where I decided to become a professional photographer

3. I’m drawn to Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic design. To me, architecture (and people) are most beautiful when they belong to their environment

4. I’ve always been drawn to Van Gogh’s use of color and artistic expression

5. Meeting my husband at a church service in Monaco was a lesson in staying open to the unexpected

6. Before becoming a full time photographer, I was an ESL teacher. It taught me that you don’t need a shared language to understand a person’s heart; you just need to listen

7. I live in Birkenstocks even when exploring Portuguese palaces

8. I think morning lattes taste better in hand painted polish pottery

9. I love highland cows. Their messy hair and gentle souls are the ultimate unscripted beauty

10. While I love to travel, my heart is in Pittsburgh

I am honored to share that this image has been named a finalist in the “Frame Within a Frame” category in the VOICE Photography Competition.

My goal is to honor the story of the person I’m documenting. This woman was my neighbor, and she was my friend, she was a force—fiercely strong, full of life, and so generous with the wisdom she shared with me.

In the frame, you can see layers of the family she built. She is surrounded by four of her children and a painting by her husband. She was the heart that held them together. I’m grateful for this recognition, and I’m grateful I had the chance to document a small part of her incredible story.

Every senior session reminds me that while the backdrops stay the same, the stories never do. It’s the quiet conversations between shots that I’ll remember long after the gallery is delivered. I’m curious... are you someone who loves a big, iconic city view, or do you prefer the hidden, quiet corners?

Looking back at these photos of Lisbon, I realize I have a dozen shots of the climb but almost none of the view from the top. I think I’ve always been more interested in the journey than the perfect postcard finish—what kind of traveler are you?
