En janvier 2021, l’exposition « Poser pour la Liberté / Standing for Freedom », projet initié par la professeure Pascale Laborier avec le photographe Pierre Jérôme Adjedj était exposée pour la première fois à la Cité du Design de Saint-Etienne.

Après 5 ans, l’exposition a été accueillie 27 fois en France, en Allemagne, en Belgique, aux Etats-Unis et en Uruguay.

Durant ces cinq années, la question des libertés académiques et de la liberté de création est restée centrale, et continue de l’être dans un contexte international toujours plus incertain. Au premier semestre 2026, nous aurons l’honneur de présenter l’exposition à l'Universität Bremen, l'Europa-Universität Flensburg, l'Universität Rostock, ainsi qu’à la Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin dans le cadre de l’Academic Freedom Week, pour continuer à redonner aux chercheuses, chercheurs et artistes en exil une voix et un visage.

Le Programme national d'accueil en urgence des scientifiques et artistes en exil (PAUSE), partenaire du projet depuis son origine, continue d’assurer sa mission d’accueil dans un contexte difficile. In January 2021, the exhibition “Poser pour la Liberté / Standing for Freedom,” a project initiated by Pr. Pascale Laborier with photographer Pierre Jérôme Adjedj, was first exhibited at the Cité du Design in Saint-Étienne.

After five years, the exhibition has been hosted 27 times in France, Germany, Belgium, the United States, and Uruguay.

Over these five years, the issue of academic freedom and freedom of creation has remained central—and continues to be so in an increasingly uncertain international context. In the first half of 2026, we will have the honor of presenting the exhibition in Bremen, Flensburg, Rostock, and Berlin as part of Academic Freedom Week, to continue giving voice and visibility to researchers and artists in exile.

The Programme national d'accueil en urgence des scientifiques et artistes en exil (PAUSE), a partner of the project since its inception, continues to fulfill its mission of welcoming scholars and artists in difficult circumstances. Le Programme national d'accueil en urgence des scientifiques et artistes en exil (PAUSE) contribue depuis 2017 à l'accueil de chercheuses, chercheuses et artistes menacé·es dans leur pays, et défend les libertés académiques et la liberté de création.

PAUSE est avec l'Université Paris Nanterre un soutien central du projet Poser pour la Liberté / Standing for Freedom. Nous sommes aujourd'hui très inquiets des menaces qui pèsent sur le programme. La principale menace est financière, et complètement liée à la dégradation de la situation internationale, qui fait exploser le nombre de demandes et par là-même le budget nécessaire à l'accueil et à la protection des personnes. L'évolution en France du discours sur l'accueil contribue également à fragiliser le programme.

Il est indispensable en premier lieu d'aider Programme national d'accueil en urgence des scientifiques et artistes en exil (PAUSE) à financer ses actions. C'est un enjeu à la fois humain et politique.

Since 2017, the National Emergency Program for the Reception of Exiled Scientists and Artists (PAUSE) has contributed to welcoming threatened researchers and artists in exile, defending academic freedom and creative freedom.

Programme national d'accueil en urgence des scientifiques et artistes en exil (PAUSE), together with the Université Paris Nanterre, is a central supporter of the project Poser pour la Liberté / Standing for Freedom. Today, we are deeply concerned about the threats facing the program. The main threat is financial, directly linked to the deterioration of the international situation, which has caused a sharp increase in the number of applications—and consequently, in the budget required to host and protect these individuals. The evolving discourse in France regarding reception policies is also contributing to weakening the program.

It is essential, first and foremost, to help the National Emergency Program for the Reception of Exiled Scientists and Artists fund its activities. This is both a human and political imperative.

Trois jours après Georgia Tech à Atlanta, l'exposition Poser pour la Liberté / Standing for Freedom sera accueillie à partir du 2 octobre à l'University of Pittsburgh par le Département de Physique et de Sciences. Il s'agit de la quatrième étape de l'exposition aux États-Unis, après le Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), l'Ambassade de France aux Etats-Unis, soit la deuxième manifestation américaine depuis janvier 2025. Pascale Laborier, co-auteure et commissaire de l'exposition, sera présente sur place.

Un grand merci à Jeanne Revil (CNRS) pour son aide, qui nous permet de continuer à sensibiliser le public à la liberté académique.

3 days after Georgia Tech in Atlanta, the Poser pour la Liberté / Standing for Freedom exhibition will be hosted from October 2 by the University of Pittsburgh Library System (ULS) and the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Physics and science. This marks the exhibition’s fourth stop in the United States, following showings at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the French Embassy in the USA, and Georgia Tech —the second U.S. event since January 2025. Pascale Laborier, co-author and exhibition curator, will be present onsite.

The Poser pour la Liberté / Standing for Freedom exhibition will be on display today, September 29, during the France Atlanta Science Summit at the Georgia Tech Institute of Technology. This marks the exhibition’s third stop in the United States, following showings at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Ambassade de France aux Etats-Unis —the first U.S. event since January 2025. Pascale Laborier, co-author and exhibition curator, will be present onsite.
