This is why I keep bringing my camera on the kayak.

What started with a few people at the launch quickly turned into a quiet, beautiful morning on the water. I paddled past dead trees rising from the lake, with 20 to 30 swallows circling and cutting through the air.
Then I heard it.
A pair of red-headed woodpeckers were working the shoreline timber, moving through the trees while I sat back and tried not to disturb the moment.
That quiet access, being able to watch wildlife behave naturally from the water, is exactly why I take the risk of bringing my photography gear with me on the kayak.

Yesterday evening, ended up taking a hike out at Burgess Falls State Park to change things up a bit from some kayaking to the base. The one scene that seriously stood out was this bridge. It’s a reminder that there is so much beauty in our everyday lives, that people tend to overlook.

Morning shoot with the Cookeville Camera Club at Johnson’s Nursery yesterday.

Lighting, wind, separating your subject, and composition, and lens choices can make or break your flower imagery quicker than other subjects.

I used my Canon USA R5, paired with the RF 24mm F/1.4, and shot some a mile away with the RF 200-800mm F/6.3-9 using its manual focus.

To help with some lighting, I approached some warmer tones with my Lume Cube RGB Go.

Enjoy!

Saturday morning I brought my Jackson Kayak back out onto Center Hill Lake, and it was one of those days that reminds me why I do this.

It’s easy to look at photos and think it’s simple, but most people don’t see the early mornings, how many trips, how many different locations tracking the subject, the changing weather, the missed opportunities, and frustration, or the long stretches where nothing happens.

Sometimes you question if you’re in the right place at the right time, or if you’re doing it right at all.

Kingfishers, Starlings, Swallows, Woodpeckers, it was worth every second. I also met a father and son that was spending the morning kayaking, and wanted to make sure to share the moment with them

Last weekend was the first weekend I have really had any time to do any photography this year. Finally got the Jackson Kayak out on the water for the first time of the year. To kick it off, I was blessed with some Otters, even playing and turning my kayak on me, had a raccoon come down for a drink, and a squirrel eating some nuts. There is a lot in store for this year, and it's only going to get better from here. I also want to say Happy Easter to everyone. Hope y'all got to enjoy it with your friends and family.

Yesterday morning I attempted to capture the eclipse, but was met with cloud cover. Last night I had a message sent to me “had I seen the moon?” Grabbed my camera and went for it. The moon was tucked back in the trees, with light clouds giving it a fog effect. Got creative with my vantage point to pull this off, and had my Canon USA R5 paired with my RF 200-800 on manual focus to slip through the trees.

For the past 7 years, this old barn has called to me. I’d drive by, camera ready, but the conditions never aligned. It had flat lighting, overgrowth hiding its character, or just bad timing. Then the big freeze came and I was able to make it there. Heavy ice coated every branch, the sky turned that perfect moody blue, and suddenly it all clicked. Used my Canon R5 w/ RF 200-800

Even though the ice storm has passed and the slow thaw has begun, winter is still hanging on in Celina.

I spent some time this morning around Downtown Celina and The Square and it felt like I was stepping back into a quiet winter wonderland. It had been years since I’d last been there, and I had almost forgotten how beautiful, and different it feels to other parts of Tennessee, especially near Dale Hollow Lake.

I was fortunate enough to capture this moment of a Red Shouldered Hawk, high in an ice covered tree, patiently watching for prey.
