A RISKY MOVE PAYS OFF...

After sitting all morning chasing two of my target bucks that I have been after all season, with little deer movement and no sight of my target bucks, I decided to make a risky move. While I was hunting, my dad decided to walk to a tripod we have setup about 200 yards behind our farmhouse. As he was walking to his tripod, he spotted a shooter buck that had been bedding down in a CRP field. He then proceeded to see this buck multiple times in the area. After he told me this I decided to get down from my stand and drive back to the house. I parked at the house, knocked an arrow and began walking through the CRP field where he had last seen the buck in hopes of kicking him up and getting a shot. After realizing that would be very unlikely, I decided to climb an old stand in a fence row, about 50 yards where my dad was sitting. At 10:03 I sent a text that I was in that stand and I was going to try to get eyes on the buck. At the same exact time my dad texted me saying “look at pond. He’s in front.” I immediately look up and there he is, 20 yards in front of me, heading directly to me. With this stand I was in being only 5 feet off the ground, I was basically looking eye to eye with him. He got to 10 yards and I stopped him to take a broadside shot, but he decided to take another step which put a branch exactly where I wanted to aim. He then took one more step and was looking directly at me. It was now or never, he put his head up and I let it fly. A frontal shot was all I had at that point and I hit him perfectly. He ran about 100 yards and disappeared into the timber. My dad heard and saw the shot and we both had eyes on him. Having to take a frontal shot, we backed out and gave it over an hour before tracking him. We found good blood immediately and I knew he couldn’t have gone far. After tracking him about 150 yards, there he lay!

This was definitely the most intense and quickest hunt I have ever had and I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to harvest this mature buck.

Huge Thank You to my dad (Jeff Price) for putting me on this buck and for helping with the track job!
