There’s something different when you get this close.

You start to see the story in the details. The wear on the horn from years of use. The texture in the fur, thick and uneven, built for survival. And that eye… calm, aware, and carrying more history than most people will ever understand.

These aren’t just animals you photograph from a distance. The closer you get, the more you realize how much character they carry. The coloring, the contrast, the raw texture… it’s all part of what makes them so incredible to stand in front of.

Moments like this are why I keep coming back out here.

Huge thanks to my good friend Tommy Beartrack with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribe for always welcoming me out and sharing these moments.

This one right here… this is why you chase the right gear.

The NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S is everything a wildlife photographer hopes for. Sharp, fast, and just locks onto moments like this without hesitation. It’s one of those lenses that doesn’t just take pictures… it elevates what you’re able to see and capture. Honestly, it’s a dream lens, and after spending time with it, I get why.

But gear only gets you so far. What really matters is standing in front of a herd like this… around 400 head of American bison moving across Cheyenne and Arapaho land. That kind of access isn’t normal, and it’s definitely not something I take lightly. Every time I’m out there, I’m reminded how special it is to witness and photograph animals like this on land that carries so much history and meaning.

And none of it happens without people like my good friend Tommy Beartrack. What started as a few shoots has turned into a real friendship. Tommy, I appreciate you more than you know for always welcoming me out and letting me do what I love.

There’s something about black and white that strips everything down to truth. No distractions, no color to lean on… just texture, light, and presence.

Bill doesn’t need anything extra anyway. The weight of his stare, the history in that coat, the quiet strength… it all shows up louder when the color disappears.

This one felt right in monochrome. Timeless, simple, honest.

Do you prefer your wildlife in color, or does black and white hit different for you?

Last May I had the chance to spend some time at White Bison Ranch in Texas, and for someone like me who spends a lot of time photographing bison, it honestly felt like stepping into another world.

For a bison photographer, it’s hard to describe how special that experience really is.

One moment a group came walking over the hill straight toward me, calm and curious. The next moment they were scattered across the pasture grazing quietly near the water under the shade of the trees. Every direction I looked there was another scene unfolding. It was one of those days where the camera never really had a chance to rest.

With spring here again, I’ve been thinking about this place a lot lately. I might need to see if I can talk them into letting me come back down for another day behind the camera. A ranch full of white bison is about as close to a dream location as a bison photographer can get.

Have you ever seen a white bison before?

There are moments in wildlife photography when everything just comes together. The light, the angle, the timing. This bald eagle banked through the sky like it owned every inch of it, wings stretched wide and locked into the wind.

Up close, you realize how incredible these birds really are. Every feather working together, every movement controlled and powerful. Watching one glide overhead is something that never gets old.

This image was captured at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge, one of the best places in Oklahoma to witness these incredible birds in the winter months. Seeing a bald eagle move through the sky like this is a reminder of just how wild and beautiful our natural world still is.

What’s the most incredible wildlife moment you’ve experienced?

The best part of the day happens before most people ever see it.

Out near Lake Tenkiller, the horizon caught fire while these cows rested along the ridge line. Just silhouettes settled into the earth as the sky burned bright behind them. No rush. No tension. Just a slow, steady beginning.

That’s why I get up early. To witness light like this stretching across eastern Oklahoma. To feel that quiet before the world starts moving.

Are you someone who greets the morning… or do you let it pass you by?

Truth… As a wildlife photographer I can relate and I’ve done this numerous times. It’s the moment not the image.

A few weeks ago I found myself back in the Santa Fe and Taos area, standing on the edge of the Rio Grande Gorge with the drone in the air and nothing but space in front of me. This video is the flight moving through the gorge toward the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge while I sat right on the edge, just taking it all in.

It’s hard to explain the feeling of this place unless you’ve been there. The scale of it makes everything go quiet for a minute. The wind moving through the canyon, the river far below, and the feeling of being small in the best possible way. Places like this remind me why I love exploring and why I keep coming back to the Southwest. It slows you down and makes you present whether you planned on it or not.

There’s no other way to experience this perspective without a drone, and being able to capture it while just sitting there and taking it all in made it even better.

Have you ever been somewhere that made you stop and just sit for a while?

This image takes me back to a horse photoshoot I did about a year ago. Horses have a kind of presence that’s hard to explain until you’re standing close to one. There’s strength there, but also a quiet grace. Every movement feels intentional. Powerful without needing to prove anything.

What stood out to me most wasn’t just the beauty or elegance of the horse itself, but the connection between the horse and its owner. The way they communicate without words. Small movements, subtle cues, trust built over time. Even as someone who doesn’t own a horse, you can see that bond immediately. It’s not just an animal and a person. It’s a partnership.

Watching that relationship reminded me how unique horses are. They respond to emotion, energy, and consistency in a way that creates something deeper than simple training. There’s respect on both sides, and when that connection is there, it shows in every step and every look.

For those of you who own horses or have spent time around them, what is it about that bond that keeps you coming back?
