One of my earliest bug memories as a kid was collecting and playing with stag beetles. I was born in 1985, lived regular suburban house, with a small yard...the amount of bugs back then would shock you younger people. I know it's popular to be nostalgic for the 90s, but man what I wouldn't give to see what macro would have been like 35 years ago.

All that being said, stag beetles try so hard to ruin my peaceful night walks. I cant help but have a minifreak out every time I hear that loud buzz coming right for my head. Or when they dive bomb into my stage setup. At least this guy gave me a good photo!

All buggin, no editing. So back to some simple single shots/small stacks from back in the day.

Remember, if you feel like you aren't seeing any bugs, that means slow down and really look at where you're currently standing; you'll find something. So many times ill catch myself walking a mile and never seeing anything. As soon as I pause and really look, there's always something hiding!

Never leave home without your camera!

My 2 yr old nephew is already an avid bug hunter and we were lucky enough to find this on our break from yard work.

In his final sentient moments, before the fungus totally consumes his body and brain, he settles into his final resting place, alongside his love, to be together forever. 😢

I heard its fly friday, so I guess this counts! And sorry jumping spider eyelashes, but spider mohawks might be my new favorite bug fashion statement!

Can anyone give me an accurate identification of this spider? I assumed it was a type of nursery web spider, but the eyes don't seem right. Thanks in advance!

These zerene stacks did not go well at all. I have no idea why, but there was so much flaring and blurring, I had to spend a lot of time in photoshop cleaning up edges, and background. 40-60 images stacked at f5.6. Should have probably gone with a higher f stop for the large amount of depth of field these big long legs required.

This calm tiger moth let me pick a couple different stages, let me know which one you think looks best!

Tried to save some time and not denoise these images in lightroom before stacking. It's not as big a difference as expected, at leastvon instagram, but you can definitely see the noise in the background.

30-40 image stacks, f 5.6, which i think is a little too low for handheld - cant quite trust myself to hit those small DOF planes. Not worth it.

I don't actively look to photograph snakes, but I happened upon this garter snake while peeling back fallen tree bark. We were both quite surprised, to say the least! This was the day I also learned that snakes don't need to be facing you to jump at you!

Mayflies are some of my favorite macro subjects, especially when they're in the fangs of a spider! 😁. They really just exude character. Plus them come in all sorts of interesting colors.

Nursery web spiders seem to to the best predators in my area. They're all over the long grass and are quick and vicious. They also rarely let go of their prey, so you can maneuver them around easier than other spiders. That being said, they have rather boring, beady eyes. Oh well, no one's perfect...

Robber fly getting a taste of its own medicine!

There really is a a lot of checks and balances in the insect world. I guess if there is any one species that is over powered, its probably a fully grown Chinese mantis (invasive in my area). Though I'm not sure if any birds enjoy eating them.

Easily the most captivating, drama-filled bug footage I've ever seen. So much frantic, yet purposeful behavior. Better than most the actin movies I've seen recently!
