-40 degrees to 105 degrees … a 145 degree swing. That’s what Kevin and I just experienced in one week! That’s got to be some kind of record, right?? Anyhow, just got back last week from our Aurora Workshop in Alaska and despite the ridiculous cold, it was amazing as always. Starting by sharing this image from one of the most incredible moments we have ever witnessed! For a time, everything stood still and we forgot that it was 40 below zero. We shut out the cold and stood there, transfixed. There are really no words to adequately describe this night and what it meant other than to say it will stay with us forever.

Kevin and I were incredibly busy this past fall with some big life moves that left us pretty much zero time to get out and shoot. We did manage to take one day to ourselves in all the chaos and head to Sedona.

So here it is .... the one and only image we got this fall, lol, and I suffered for it. I don’t recommend standing thigh deep in freezing cold water for 45 minutes while only wearing sandals (and yes, I planned it that way), but it was worth it to me until I started to walk out only to realize I couldn’t feel my feet or legs. What do they call that? Comfortably numb. Aside from shivering uncontrollably on the 3 mile hike out in the dark, it was a great day and I came away with a shot I have been wanting for a very long time

So excited to be heading back to Death Valley in a couple of days for our first workshop of 2026! Last time we were there was two years ago during the big flood. Hoping the water hangs on just a little longer out there so our guests can enjoy the beauty of Badwater Basin with water. Posting a few of our favorite shots of DV taken on our many trips there over the past decade. Can’t wait to be there!

Kind of lost our minds a little bit when this happened last week! We watched this dust storm forming to the south of us. It looked like it was going to fall apart before reaching us but then it finally got it’s act together just as it approached the Sawtooth Mountains and the setting sun came out to illuminate it in beautiful shades of pink. Then the giant lightning bolts started dropping. We couldn’t believe it! There was only a handful but it was incredible to see these beautiful clear-air bolts hitting in front of the dust wall. Usually any lightning you do get in a dust storm is behind the dust wall and at least partially obscured if not completely hidden, so this was a real treat!

Yesterday wasn’t too bad for our first monsoon chase of the season! Started with a weak dust storm and ended with two photogenic (and very dusty) sunset storms that formed on either side of us south of Buckeye. It probably won’t translate on social media but the last photo in the set is included because very strong outflow winds from this sunset storm caused about a hundred turkey vultures roosting nearby to take flight at the same time. Super cool to see in person! Will have to post the video at some point :-)!

This year’s trip to the Plains was nothing short of spectacular ... and tiring, but so worth it! Three tours spent with incredible people; nearly a month long; 14,500 miles driving through 8 states; traveling as far east as the Missouri/Tennessee border; and 23 tornadoes seen (the most for us in any one year)! We couldn’t have done any of it without our clients. We thank each and every one of you for your trust, your friendship, your help in the unexpected (flat tire) and the fun you bring to every chase!

These are just a few of the storms we got this year! 2026 tour schedule is posted on our website. Can’t wait for next year and all the adventures it will bring!

We just got back this week from almost a month spent leading our storm workshops in the Great Plains and will be sharing more in the next post on that, but we have to start with last Thursday, June 5th ... my (Tina) birthday. I was hoping for a good day of chasing as a little gift from Mother Nature but never could I have imagined the treat she had in store for me and all of us chasers that day. This giant dusty wedge tornado under incredible structure was the highlight of the trip! We saw no less than 7 tornadoes that day, with this one near Morton, TX the pinnacle! Top tier chase day and one of the best birthdays I have ever had! More to come on the entire trip!

Happy World Donkey Day!! An animal that is beloved, but still doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Known for their stubborn demeanor, comic antics and boisterous bray, some don’t realize how intelligent they are, capable of forming complex social and emotional bonds. We are fortunate to live near wild burros and have enjoyed observing them for many years. Anyone who has donkeys in their lives, whether owning them domestically or observing them in the wild, knows what a privilege it is to simply be in their presence!

We missed posting for Earth Day, but we figure better late than never, plus shouldn’t every day be Earth Day?! This year we decided to pay homage to our home state. Kevin and I are both transplants to Arizona, but we have been lucky enough to call this place our home for over 20 years and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Contrary to popular belief, Arizona is not just a dry, hot desert. It is a place of immense ecological diversity and astonishing beauty that enjoys all four seasons and myriad wildlife. It is a place of endless discovery and wonder. We feel so fortunate to call Arizona home!
