There is a house just around the corner from us that goes all out for Halloween.

We drove past it the other day and I already know what the next few weeks are going to look like. Evening walks over there to check what is new. My son and daughter either holding my hands or racing ahead on their bikes. Stopping on the sidewalk to look at whatever they have added since last time.

This is the part of October I love most. Not the big plans (although Mortimer Farms is definitely on the list, and the Halloween train at McCormick Stillman, because my kids would not forgive me otherwise). It is really the smaller stuff.

Walking in the neighborhood when the evening air is finally something you want to be outside in. My little guy maybe getting his first pedal bike this winter if he keeps up what he's been doing on that balance bike.

These evenings feel a little shorter than I would like. But I am trying to just be in them.

October and I have an understanding.

The heat starts to ease up. The evenings get their first hint of something resembling cool. The light turns golden in a way it simply does not do in July.

And I get to photograph families in it.

That is the trade. And I think I got the better end of it.

If this is the season you have been waiting for to finally do photos with your family, I am glad you waited. The light right now is worth it.

I want to talk about something I think about a lot as a lifestyle family photographer.

Faces matter.

Not in a vanity sense. In a storytelling sense. The eyes are where you see it all. The joy, the connection, the love that is happening between people in real time. I can capture a hand being held or a head resting on a shoulder and it is beautiful, but it is not the whole picture.

To do this work the way I believe in doing it, I need to show faces.

And at the same time, I know that not every parent wants their child's image shared publicly. That is a completely valid choice and one I respect without question.

So here is how I handle it: you decide. Always. Your family, your call.

It is your photos of your people. My job is to capture them well and share them only in the way that feels right to you.

I'm far from a perfect mom. There are moments of overwhelm, when I lose my cool and yell at the kids. When all I want to do is disassociate on social media to disengage from the feelings and noises and everything that pull me in every direction and completely overwhelm my senses.

I love my kids more than anything. I fought for them through multiple rounds of fertility treatments. They are a miracle that I couldn't be more grateful for and sometimes all I want is to not be touched, not hear tiny screaming voices and bickering. And the guilt I feel for that is also completely devastating.

I am not a perfect mom and I'm trying. Trying to repair the breaks I cause when I make mistakes, when I yell and see my kids faces crumble. Loving and trying to be kind and teach them to be kind, good human beings who accept other people for their flaws, but are also strong enough to know that they deserve to be treated with respect.

I'm afraid that my failings and imperfections will cause lasting harm. Things they won't be able to get past or somehow make them feel like their perfect beautiful selves aren't good enough.

And isn't that parenthood. Love and fear and guilt and trying and loving even harder.

Arizona fall means the temperatures have dropped all the way down to the low nineties (or close to it 😆).

We're calling it sweater weather. We are not ready to be corrected.

The light though...is stunning. That part is not a consolation prize. The golden hour in October out here is legitimately gorgeous and I will defend that until the actual cold shows up sometime in November (or December 😆).

Every session, no matter how hot it is outside or how many miles a family has traveled to get there, I'm always looking for that one moment.

The one where the kid catches my eye and just... lights up or just stares intently at the camera. Where nobody is performing....it's just real.

That's the shot. Every time. The one that happened because we slowed down and let it.

It's not something I can manufacture or direct. It's something I wait for, and watch for, and make sure I'm ready when it comes. Because those are the photos you're going to want to hold onto. Is there a photo from your own family sessions that you always love looking back at? I'd love to hear what it is.

Busy season in summary:

Weekends: sessions.
Weekdays: editing, snacks from the pantry I keep telling myself I will organize, more editing.
Evenings: collapsing in a way that still somehow feels good because the work is work I love.

School activities are in full swing, the holidays are already lurking, and my calendar is doing what fall calendars do.

It is a lot. It is also the time of year I genuinely look forward to the most. Both things are true and I am making peace with that.

I photographed a school again this fall that I had first worked with back in April.

Walking in and recognizing faces was one of those small unexpected joys that I did not see coming.

But what really got me was how much some of the kids had changed. Not in a way I can easily describe. Just older. More themselves, somehow. In six months.

I think about my own kids when I notice things like that. Because I am with them every day, the changes happen in a way that sneaks up on me. I see my daughter differently now that she is in kindergarten instead of preschool, but even that shift happened gradually right in front of me.

Standing in that school looking at kids I had only photographed once before, I had this strange feeling. Like I was seeing what six months actually looks like from the outside.

It made me wonder what I am missing with my own two, just because I am too close to it.

A few fall sessions are still open and I would love to spend a golden hour with your family before the season fills up.

Here is what I want you to know about what a session actually looks like with me.

I am not directing you into poses and snapping shots from a distance. I am there with you. Watching for the moments that happen between the posed ones. The way your kid grabs your hand out of nowhere. The laugh that comes out of nowhere. The look your partner gives you when they think no one is watching.

Those are the ones that end up being your favorites. I promise.

When you book a session with me, one of the first things you will do is tell me whether I can share your photos on social media.

Not after the session. Not in a follow-up email you might miss. Right at booking. It is built into the process on purpose.

You get a clear opt-in or opt-out, and whatever you choose is what I follow. No need to track me down later and ask me not to post something. No wondering if I remembered. You told me at the start, and that is that.

I built it this way because I have been on the other side of it as a client. Having to reach out after the fact to ask a photographer not to share your child's image is awkward and it should not be your job to manage that.

So I made it mine instead.
