What is in a name? Seems like a simple question with many interpretations depending on who answers.
A name will forever "brand" us as the human species, it will stay with us longer than any friend or family member. A name becomes an analogous trusted confidante that will tell others who we are, and often can shape our personality.
Is the name fun, or formal, is the name after someone who the parent admired or adored, will the name evoke a sense of familiarity when others speak it?
So this post to all those who realize the importance of a name and what it symbolizes.
This post is also to recognize a family who I have gotten to know since last year, who are making a difference. The name I am referring is not the child's in the photo, but to the beloved horse of the family.
The name, "No Name" comes from the band America's song -"Horse with No Name" - "I've been through the desert on a horse with no name, it felt good to get out of the rain, In the desert you can remember your name"...
No Name was a wild mustang from the HMA in Little Colorado. Yes, the kind books are written about, movies are made, and the ones being rounded up across the west.
No Name was gentled, a natural training technique for an unhandled or wild horse. without tools or aggressive training. The patience involved and skill will enable the horse to have a positive experience and build a lasting bond with their human.
No Name like all wild mustangs, likely ran with his own family band or bachelors on open plains of Colorado, before man stepped in and stole his freedom. These horses whether from HMAs or at times reservations..
No Name was one of the lucky ones, he was adopted by Logan - the Phoenix Jc Comancheros Trail Boss. Logan and his wife Janna (who also rode this year), are an amazing couple, and this is their young son.
When I first photographed the Pony Express in 2025- he was only 3 months old. Now maybe a future cowboy, or perhaps he will choose a different path.
However, I feel these photos tell a story about family. This family, their love of horses, their children, and also No Names love of his adoptive human family.
No Name I noticed as I photographed him yesterday (before I even looked at the photos at home), told me so much. As I watched, he walked as a proud father - carrying his owners son as if he were his own offspring. It wasn't the mail he was proud of, he was proud of this little boy and making sure he was safe, and protected.
Look at not only his face but the face of this baby.
Horses feel, they sense every emotion we carry. Unless you have ever been around them, you would not fully understand the depth of their emotional intelligence.
So here is No Name, his very name personifies him. Because he didn't need a warriors name, or a magical name, his name is memorable for the sheer fact he is beyond his name.
Regardless of his given name, it epitomizes exponential depth not seen. . In my opinion - No "given" Name, could ever come close to expressing all that he or any horse embodies innately. They are other worldly, similar to the unicorns of fiction - gifts from god that if you watch closely in fairytales and children's dreams. We are in awe of their ethereal magic.
So from the bottom of my heart, thank you Logan and Janna- for gifting the world with No Name, his story, giving of yourselves for a cause, and raising your children to respect and trust these beautiful creatures.
And, thank you No Name, for being an ambassador for all Wild Mustangs, who are still wild, and for those who lose or will lost their freedom. Thank you immensely for allowing me to capture your essence. You will teach others to see what family means to even the wildest of mustangs.
And perhaps this will help others.
Look closely at these 4 photos, the 1st - the precious cargo No Name carries, something caught my attention, and it was not until later I realized, the universe was whispering to me to take photos, that until they turned around - I had not seen the special "package" No Name was holding onto- it wasn't the mail . 😉
