For 13 years, while I was documenting the stories and lives of strangers, I was at the same time unconsciously looking for and building my own identity in a country that equally showed me magic and pain, exuberance and loss, vulnerability and fortitude. A place that never let me settle into certainty, but always gave me enough beauty, and heart, to stay. The camera became both shield and mirror: In the faces of others I was slowly finding the edges of my own.

Our story on the escaramuza, the only event for women in Mexico’s national sport of charrería, in the April 2026 issue of Arizona Highways, dedicated to celebrating Mexican heritage in Arizona.

More than a series of equestrian exercises, it is truly a family affair and a labour of love.

In my "Family Matters" series, I photographed families living under the threat of violence and forced disappearances, using the same tool they use to document their own lives —the cell phone— to address a central paradox of our times: never have so many images been produced, yet fewer and fewer are printed and kept.

Family portraits have always fascinated me for how much of our identity they carry — capturing change over time, and telling the story of where and how we live.
