Moving portraits, Family Matters series, Colombia.

I have always been fascinated by family portraits and how much of our identity they represent. The story told by posed portraits of the family is one of change over time; family groups look different at different times, thus also telling a story about where and how we live. Maybe through them we try to assert that in a world of constant change and inevitable loss, there are things that time has no right to destroy.

I have always been fascinated by family portraits and how much of our identity they represent. The story told by posed portraits is one of change over time; family groups look different at different times, thus also telling a story about where and how we live. A family portrait is a profound way to define ourselves. In those pictures we say: These are who we are.

A person photographed has achieved a moment of redemption, saved from the fate of being forever forgotten.

They are from the Wayuu tribe in the La Guajira region of Colombia y Venezuela. Living in small, isolated communities, they’re struggling to keep a number of ancient traditions and rituals alive. The men are dedicated to hearding goats and sheep and women to handcrafts, but the dwindling rainfall pattern has made shephearding an extremely arduous and unprofitable activity.

From my “Family Matters” series, these are cell phone posed family portraits that celebrate cultural resistance and identity in communities striving to preserve their identities.

The U.N. estimates that 1.3 million Haitians are living out of their homes in the wake of an explosion of gang violence. Some are living with relatives but many are sheltering in schools, government buildings and other places that lack basic services, like bathrooms and running water.

Over the past three years, people have had to abandon their homes when gangs attacked their neighborhoods. The gangs have since banded together to take over major highways, kidnap hundreds of people and delay long-overdue presidential elections.

Moving portrait, mother and child.
On October 2022 I spent a month reporting in Sudan on assignment for UNICEF. We crisscrossed the country, from the capital, Khartoum, to Kassala, Gadaref, South Kordofan and South Darfur.
Five months after I left, in April 2023, the country fell into a brutal war that killed thousands and millions have been forced to flee their homes, making Sudan the biggest child displacement crisis in the world, according to UNICEF.
