Driving through a recent fire scar brings so many emotions: loss & devastation, bewilderment, amazement (both good and bad), shock. There's the bittersweet hope as you pass by houses that were saved surrounded by acreage that has been torched.

In many areas the roadway is the defining firebreak with devastation on one side and life on the other.

One would think there's an eerie stillness, and to a certain amount there is...until dusk comes and the insects start trilling. It's only been a number of weeks and life is starting to return: the insects, the small green buds on an otherwise scorched bush, the patches of green (now pink) timber that were hit with retardant, surrounded by a burn scar.

The Perseids over Crater Lake

10 hours. A frame every 16 seconds. My camera caught meteors before astronomical twilight and kept catching them clear through morning, with a number of larger bursts throughout the night.

This shot is a real composite: about 100 meteors were pulled from about 3,500 frames shot the night of Aug 12-13, 2026, blended with one background photo. Positions are accurate to the radiant point, though I rotated a few that streaked wild and crossed other paths for clarity, to maintain the composition.

A "true" version (no artistic rotation, pure math) is in the works. It's a lot of positional calculations and fine detail, but it's coming.

Sunrise at Crater Lake on a near windless morning, with the water as placid as I’ve seen it in ages. I just spent the entire night shooting the Perseids and am working on my first every sunset > night > sunrise holy grail timelapse. Busy working through about 6000 photos 🤣, but hope to have the initial version up soon. The meteors were quite the sight throughout the night last night. If you missed them I recommend trying tonight, before they drastically die down. pnwonderland

Took an overnighter to get away from the smoky haze, patient charts, and explore a new area. It’s too easy to get caught up in all stuff to do, and getting ourselves out reminded us how important it is to keep exploring. Bonus! A new area, new trail, and new favorite on our list!

Woodrat Fire, about 8:30pm 8/6/26 when the fire was reported to be about 300 acres and about 50% lined. Thankfully the intensity seemed to be dropping as I was up on the ridgeline. Once the helecopters stopped the sound of heavy machinery and chainsaws continued into the evening.

The Woodrat Fire in southern oregon started just after noon and has quickly build up to 200 acres on hilly terrain (as of this video). Multiple helicopters and ground crews have kept it from exploding as it could have with the windy day, but it continues to grow at this time.

Each trip out is an adventure. Sometimes the weather and light play wonderfully, and sometimes it's an exercise in learning.

Here are a few Idaho waterfalls from a recent trip as we travelled from Boise down to Twin Falls where there are so many small waterfalls along the Snake River canyon cascading into the mix.

Sometimes marine cloudbanks give an unexpectedly epic view. We stopped on a whim while driving north along the Oregon coast and managed to catch the sun as it was just starting to illuminate the underside of the cloudbank ❤
