🦅🇺🇸 THE COMPLETE STORY OF JACKIE & SHADOW — BIG BEAR’S LEGENDARY BALD EAGLES
❤️ A story of love, motherhood, survival, heartbreak, and a legacy that will never be forgotten.
High above Big Bear Lake in California, a remarkable bald eagle named Jackie captured the hearts of millions of people around the world. Alongside her longtime mate, Shadow, she became one of the most beloved wild eagle mothers ever watched through a live nest camera.
But behind the beautiful pictures was a real story of struggle, loss, courage, and hope.
🌲 2012 — THE BEGINNING OF JACKIE’S STORY
Jackie was believed to have hatched in Big Bear Valley in 2012, to a bald eagle pair known as Ricky and Lucy. She was recognized as the first documented bald eagle chick to hatch in the valley.
Her birthplace helped establish a remarkable eagle story in a mountain community where bald eagles had once been mainly seasonal visitors.
🦅 2016–2018 — JACKIE BECOMES A MOTHER
As Jackie matured, she returned to the nesting area and paired with a male eagle known as Mr. B.
In 2018, they raised two eaglets named BBB, short for Big Bear Baby, and Stormy.
Sadly, BBB died during severe weather, but Stormy survived and eventually left the nest.
That same year, another male arrived. He became known as Shadow, and a new chapter in Jackie’s life began.
❤️ 2018 — JACKIE AND SHADOW’S PARTNERSHIP
Jackie and Shadow formed their partnership in 2018. Together, they rebuilt their nest, defended their territory, incubated eggs, brought food home, and cared for their young.
Their relationship became famous through the Friends of Big Bear Valley nest cameras.
People around the world watched them share parenting duties, exchange affectionate gestures, survive freezing winters, and face the unpredictable challenges of nature.
🐣 2019 — SIMBA AND COOKIE
In 2019, Jackie and Shadow welcomed two eaglets: Simba and Cookie.
Tragically, Cookie died at around six weeks old during a cold storm.
Simba survived the nestling stage and fledged successfully. He became the first eaglet the famous pair raised to flight together.
However, the dangers of the wild continued beyond the nest, and Simba was later reported to have died.
❄️ 2020–2021 — YEARS OF HEARTBREAK
Not every egg becomes a chick, and not every chick survives.
Jackie and Shadow experienced unsuccessful eggs and difficult breeding seasons. Ravens, freezing temperatures, storms, and other natural challenges threatened their efforts.
Despite these losses, the pair continued returning to their nest and trying again.
Their story reminded viewers that nature does not promise a happy ending every season.
🌟 2022 — SPIRIT TAKES FLIGHT
In 2022, an eaglet named Spirit hatched on March 3.
Spirit grew under the care of both parents and eventually fledged at the end of May.
For viewers who had followed years of disappointment, Spirit’s successful journey brought renewed hope.
🕊️ 2023–2024 — PATIENCE AND PERSEVERANCE
These seasons brought further nesting challenges and unsuccessful eggs.
During a powerful winter storm in February 2023, Jackie endured extraordinary conditions while protecting her eggs.
Her dedication to the nest became one of the most memorable parts of her story.
Even when breeding seasons ended without surviving chicks, Jackie and Shadow continued their natural cycle of nesting and caring for their territory.
🐣 2025 — THREE CHICKS, ONE TRAGIC LOSS
In 2025, three eaglets hatched: Misty, Sunny, and Gizmo.
It was a joyful moment for the worldwide eagle-watching community.
Then a severe snowstorm struck.
Misty did not survive, leaving Sunny and Gizmo as the two remaining chicks.
Against the odds, both young eagles grew stronger and fledged successfully: Sunny on June 2 and Gizmo on June 7.
For the first time, Jackie and Shadow successfully fledged two eaglets in the same season.
🌅 2026 — SANDY AND LUNA
The beginning of 2026 brought another setback when the pair’s first clutch failed.
But Jackie laid another clutch, and two eaglets hatched in early April.
They were named Sandy and Luna, honoring Sandy Steers, the beloved founder and executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley, who died in February 2026.
Both eaglets grew and fledged in late June. They were last seen on camera in July as they began their independent lives beyond the nest.
💔 AUGUST 2026 — JACKIE’S FINAL CHAPTER
In July 2026, Jackie was found weak and unable to fly near Big Bear Lake.
She was rescued and taken to the Ojai Raptor Center for treatment.
Veterinarians worked tirelessly to help her recover. She experienced severe anemia, significant weight loss, kidney-related complications, and other serious health problems.
Despite intensive treatment, Jackie died during the overnight hours of August 9–10, 2026.
She was approximately 14 years old.
Her death brought an outpouring of sadness from people who had followed her life for years.
For many, it felt like losing a member of the family.
🦅 HOW MANY EGGS AND BABIES DID JACKIE HAVE?
According to Friends of Big Bear Valley’s remembrance of Jackie:
🥚 Total eggs laid: 25
🐣 Total eaglets hatched: 10
🪽 Eaglets that successfully fledged: 7
❤️ Approximate lifespan: 14 years
🌲 Partnership with Shadow: Beginning in 2018 and continuing until Jackie’s death in 2026
These figures include Jackie’s earlier family with Mr. B, as well as her later family with Shadow.
Fledging means a young eagle has developed enough to leave the nest and begin flying. It does not guarantee survival into adulthood.
🌎 SHADOW’S STORY CONTINUES
After Jackie’s death, Shadow remained in the Big Bear Valley area. A younger eagle known as Kaydee was later seen interacting with him near the nest.
Whether Shadow will form another lasting partnership remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, Sandy and Luna have begun their independent journeys in the wild.
🌿 JACKIE’S LASTING LEGACY
Jackie was more than a famous eagle on a livestream.
Her life helped people appreciate wildlife, understand the challenges faced by wild birds, and support the protection of natural habitats.
The conservation community also celebrated the protection of approximately 63 acres of natural shoreline near Big Bear Lake, safeguarding valuable habitat for wildlife.
Jackie’s story taught us that life in the wild includes both joy and heartbreak. Some eggs never hatch. Some chicks never grow up. Storms can change everything in a single night.
Yet the cycle continues.
❤️ Rest in peace, Jackie. Your story inspired millions, your nest brought people together, and your legacy will live on through the eagles who follow.
🦅 FLY HIGH AND FREE, JACKIE. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
