To all of our American customers, happy 4th of July and 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. At this time, it’s important to remember the values on which our country was founded. America was an idea before it was a country - an idea in the minds of visionary men and women who wanted freedom. Freedom of speech. Freedom of (and from) religion. Freedom of the press. The right to be secure in their homes and businesses. To not be deprived of life and liberty without due process. It did not distinguish between where you came from or what language you spoke. Our founding principles were no Christian, or white, or Italian, or British. They were something new and those principles have endured, even though our implementation has fallen short. Let us all rededicate ourselves to our founding principles. Have a happy and healthy holiday!

For the first time in almost 80 years, this massive hoarde of genuine press wire photos from 1947 is seeing the light of day! 1947 was a critical year in world history, and this collection has it all: war, politics, baseball, football, boxing, car/train/air crashes, massive fires and natural disasters, the formation of Pakistan and the birth of Israel and so much more! This magnificent antique 1850s 1/2 plate (5½x4¼”) Daguerreotype portrait photo of a Victorian family of eight is by renowned daguerreotypist Charles H. Williamson of Brooklyn, New York. It comes in its original full wood composite case. The case is 6x5¾x¾’’ overall.

Charles H. Williamson (1826-1874) was a highly regarded Scottish-born daguerreotypist active in Brooklyn, New York, primarily during the 1850s and 1860s. Before becoming a daguerreotypist, Williamson was a skilled watercolorist. He is celebrated as a master of the daguerreian era, particularly known for his delicate hand-coloring of plates and his portraits of children.

There are a couple of light scuffs and wear on the exterior of the case. The image has been professionally resealed. Please see photos.

This is the first time I tried my hand at disassembling, cleaning (the glass) and resealing (with Filmoplast 90) a Daguerreotype cased image! I forgot the take a “before” picture, but the glass interior was full of dust and it was hard to see the image. I removed the original seal, cleaned the glass in distilled water and replaced it. To document the resealing, I wrote the resealed date on the tape. Do you think I did a good job for my first effort?
