The Milky Way rises over the dunes on a windy night in the Outerbanks, NC. On this night, I managed to capture both red and green airglow in the sky. Really made for a beautiful sky with the Milky Way.

Airglow is a natural glow of Earth’s upper atmosphere that is commonly recorded in astrophotography from dark sky locations. It occurs when atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere release energy as light. Airglow can appear green, red, orange, or purple and often shows up in long exposure photographs as smooth bands, waves, or diffuse glows. Unlike auroras, it typically lacks the dynamic curtains, rays, and rapidly changing structures associated with geomagnetic activity.

This photo is comprised of 22 stacked exposures and the foreground of one of those shots is blended in.

Last night’s moonrise atop William Penn with Logan Square and the Swann Memorial Fountain (Alexander Calder) in the foreground.

As I was driving home from Camden, I realized that the moon might line up with William Penn. I checked my apps and sure enough, it did. It was a beautiful spring evening and lots of people were out and about. As I was set up on the Ben Franklin Parkway, a couple approached me about what I was shooting. I offered to take a shot of them. They were perfectly poised with this exact shot of the moon and William Penn behind them. It was too perfect!

Progress of a waxing gibbous moon rising behind City Hall’s William Penn statue. Also in the shot is American Airlines’ flight AA2443 on approach to PHL from ORD. I couldn’t decide which version i liked better, the one with a lot of moons or the one with just a few moons. Which one do you prefer?

Oregon Inlet Lifesaving Station

Having shot here before, I knew that I needed to arrive before blue hour to survey the terrain and get different composition ideas. I liked the idea of having a lower perspective, looking up toward the station and the sky. I used night augmented reality to see where the milky way would line up with my compositions and took screen shots so I had the right alignment for my composite. I ended up shooting the foreground during blue hour and then shot the sky later that night by the beach and blended them together.

I made a quick, last-minute decision to head south to the Outerbanks, NC this past weekend in search of clear skies to shoot the milky way. I had been eyeing the weather apps, fluctuating between Maine, Western PA, or the Outerbanks. Finally, Thursday night I made the call to head south! After a 7-hour drive, I arrived just in time for sunset and to take a quick nap before heading out for a long night of shooting.

This shot was actually my last shot of the weekend. By the end of the night, the milky way had shifted from the southeast where it rose over the ocean to the south where views were better on the western side of the island along the Pamlico Sound. I shot the milky way about 20 minutes after the start of astronomical twilight. While the sky appears to be dark, the milky way begins to fade during astronomical twilight as the sky slowly begins to brighten. This gives the sky a lighter blue color to it and sometimes, early in the season when you are facing east, you can get some pinks and oranges in the sky. I shot the foreground shortly thereafter and blended it with the stacked sky.
