Mediterranean House Gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus) — As its name implies, the Mediterranean gecko is an old-world species that is common in Southern Europe and Northern Africa. It has been introduced in many tropical areas worldwide, including urban areas, in the Southeastern United States. House Geckos are almost completely nocturnal. Their sticky toe pads allow them to climb walls and they are often observed perched on walls around outside lights, waiting to grab insects attracted to the light. By day, these lizards hide in cracks, crevices, and under tree bark. This gecko was found in an industrial part of downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina and that site has produced at least 2 or 3 others in recent years. They likely initially hitched a ride on construction materials or even house plants from Florida and survive winters hunkered in the cracks and crevices of the buildings.

The mole kingsnake is brown or gray with small reddish or dark brown blotches on its back. In some older individuals, the blotches become so faded that the snake looks uniformly brown. This snake has a row of smaller spots along each side, and its belly is usually whitish or yellow mottled with red, gray, or brown. The mole kingsnake has smooth scales and its head is not very distinct from its neck. Mole kingsnakes are strong constrictors and feed on lizards, rodents, and other snakes. (Source herpsofnc.org)

Rousey is our resident “old lady” at almost 8 years old. We got her in 2016 as a 9 month old puppy who had been fostered after being left on a chain, starving and flea covered. She’s always been very spicy. The first day we had her she bit me. It made me like her even more for some reason. As tiny as she was she wouldn’t back down from anything, even me. She’s the resident pack leader as well as our smallest dog. She has the energy of a puppy and the full excitability of the boxer breed. We love her.

Lida aka leeeeeeduhhhh is a very passive, neurotic, and sweet German Shepherd we rescued from project pearl back in 2017. When they found her she was an emaciated 40lbs. Those pictures are heart breaking. She was supposed to be “my” dog because my wife saw how distraught I had been earlier that summer after my longtime boxer, Randolph, died. The only problem was this dog originally bonded with Jess and was terrified of me. She would roll over and p*e if I came near her. Thankfully I’ve gained her trust over the years but she’s still Jess’ dog. She’s a great dog.

Ralph is probably one of the best dogs I’ve ever had. He was found as a puppy wandering with his family on the mean streets of Fayetteville. got him and his family off the streets and November of 2019 we got him as a 9 month old puppy. Best decision ever.

This is Max. He is (we think) a red heeler x English pointer mix. He may be the smartest dog I’ve ever had. My wife found him last year as a stray. He was an emaciated 6 month old puppy who we fostered and then I fell in love with.

Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad (Gastrophryne carolinensis) is a small, chubby toad with a triangular head and a fold of skin on their head behind the eyes. They eat tiny invertebrates with their favorites being ants. These guys average in size around 7/8 to 1.5 inches and are found in much of the south east at lower elevations. They are often found in summer after heavy rains, as this one was. This time of year you will likely hear their distinctive “weeeeeeeee” call long before you see them. Their call sounds like the high pitched whine of a lamb or calf. They typically call from ditches and the edges of marshy areas that fill after storms. They spend their days under the leaf litter and will often avoid predators by burrowing. They do produce a secretion when threatened that can cause burning in the mucous membranes and the eyes. This little guy was found right outside of Bethania, NC much to the chagrin of this photographer!

Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis). Up until I started this poster project I was finding these in my backyard. It’s hilarious to me that once I needed a photo they just disappeared. That said, garter snakes are super cool and another semi-aquatic NC native. I found this one while riding backroads a few nights ago. They’re opportunistic eaters and will eat anything from frogs and toads to fish to salamanders and sometimes small mammals.
