The hide:

Hunting open water with zero cover,
We make our own cover and it’s not exactly what you are thinking.

On the Susquehanna flats when bodybooting you hide behind what is called a stickup.

It’s not much but it’s something. And when done right is very successful.

A bird doesn’t look for what’s right in a spread it looks for the one thing that’s wrong with it.

Everyone has their opinion on how to hunt open water. Personally I’m not a fan of how most people do it.

I personally think there is a right and wrong way to do it.

It’s always fun watching how everyone tries to do it!

The shot of the shot…

One of my favorite things to do as a photographer is to focus on the thing that nobody else is looking at!

I have been sitting on this picture for a long time honestly because I didn’t know how to edit it to tell the story I wanted it to tell.

It has so much emotion and potential. It was so dark out that night but when the moon came out, it lit everything up like daylight to where we didn’t even really need a headlamp to set out decoys.

I have been blessed to take pictures with some pretty amazing people. But one thing I hate more than anything else in the world is a staged photo.

I get it, some people have to get x,y,z for a brand but when they stage a shot from start to finish you can feel it in the picture.

One thing I love about watching Phil’s work is he just sits back and as the morning goes by he captures the moment.

The pictures look more real… and have better emotion… because they weren’t staged.

I encourage you to capture the moment and relive the picture.

Not relive the moment by trying to capture the picture.

The hunt:

The hunt itself in my eyes is about 10% of the actual adventure maybe less.

Today I want to talk about the endless hours we sometimes spend glassing and in my eyes behind a camera. Now this makes up for the majority of a hunt (the preparation to sitting out in the duck hole with our gun).

As a photographer this is where I have massive internal battles (scouting).
Wanting to get closer for great pictures and wanting to stay as far away as possible so the birds don’t leave an area even if I can’t hunt it like in this picture.

Next to weather pressure is the number one reason why birds leave an area.

Weather is only effective when the food source is covered up.
(Lots of snow and ice)

Now we aren’t talking about blue wing teal here. They will get out of dodge every September regardless of the weather to some degree.

You can’t tell me as we get closer and closer to January when we still have our first split ducks that have only grown in numbers, that are usually long gone by now. And the lack of divers that only come down when it gets cold and things freeze up north..

Now this is an extremely small sample size but I counted about 150 drake pintails in one pond and in that picture only counted 15 hen pintails.
That’s a 10-1 drakes to hen

Most breading populations do best around a 52%-48%
It’s never 50-50 males to females.

In this group this hen was 1-26 drakes.
We need to do something about this ratio. Us as duck hunter first off you should already know your silhouettes of a bird.
Yes it is a little harder to identify in the moment at low light.
But we need to do a better job as hunters at not shooting hen pintails (in my eyes)

Now I am all about the conversation of upping the drake pintail limit to two or maybe even 3 if science supports it and having it a 0 hen limit.
Even if it’s just for a year.

I want to hear what you all think about this.

Enjoy the moment:

Somebody asked me the other day why I like photography so much.

Besides the obvious of the challenge it brings to try and get a quality photography of a duck flying through the air after tricking them into coming where you want and landing exactly how you want.

Photography lets you capture the moments you didn’t think would be a moment.

Without a camera some things kind of just get left behind in the day and over the years.

You remember the birds or your limit, the wind in the wrong direction, we remember loosing something or breaking things.
Sometimes wishing we tried something different that day.
But we never remember it all.

Duck hunters are no stranger to a fish story either…
Have you ever had a buddy scout a hole for you?

“Man I saw 200 mallards dropping into this hole you got to take off!”

What’s the first thing we ask when “that guy” goes to scout?
“Ha” show me a picture!

But my favorite part about a camera. Is that everything else melts away as you get behind the glass and you can just enjoy the moment you’re in.

I’m not thinking about work, or customers, contracts or bids. I’m not thinking about next week.
I get to take a minute and just live in the moment.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! 🦃🍁

Hope you all have a blessed day with friends and family!

In a field full of turkeys don’t be afraid to be the oddball out.

Cheers to bringing up politics and everything else that ruffles some feathers around the table. 🍻😅

As the sun sets for the last time on another out of state season I look forward to what the rest of this season brings back home as temps a crossed the country start to drop.

I try not to ever look to far into the future and live in the moment but I always look forward to coming back next year as I learn and grow as a photographer and hunter.

Every situation and season brings new challenges and opportunities for us to learn from, honestly I think that’s what makes all of this so much fun.

Getting to spend duck camp with an amazing group of guys year after year is just the icing on the cake.
