i looked down in the middle of this session and saw a four leaf clover.

i wasn't searching for one. it just... happened to be there.

jenni's sweet boy is one day older than mine, so i understood every ounce of what she was carrying that evening.
the overstimulation. the crying. wondering if everyone around you is annoyed. trying to enjoy something while your brain is doing seventeen other things at once.

i could see it on her face.
so we took our time.

we sat in silence. we laughed. we paused. we let him cry when he needed to cry. because babies cry.
and moms don't need to apologize to me for being moms.

i don't know why that clover caught my eye. maybe it didn't mean anything.
or maybe i needed the reminder that every once in a while, God hands you something small that reminds you to slow down.

shiloh wanted absolutely nothing to do with me. and honestly? she made that very clear.

if mom put her down, she cried. if i tried interacting with her, she cried. if i even thought about becoming her friend again, she probably considered crying.

mom was convinced we got nothing.

meanwhile, i was watching this little girl cling to the person she loves most in the world, pick flowers, study leaves, belly laugh between tears, and be exactly who she is right now.

y'all worry way too much.

i don't need perfect behavior. i don't need kids looking at the camera. i don't need everyone sitting still for an hour pretending to be having fun.

i just need about 1/500th of a second.
and every single time, i get it. ;)

Sometimes people walk into your life and it feels impossible that you haven't known them forever.

I've photographed Kara and Tatum twice now, and from the very beginning it felt like we skipped the small talk stage entirely.

Somewhere along the way, we realized how many mutual people, stories, and connections we shared. We had each other's backs in conversations long before we even knew who the other person was. The world is weirdly small like that.

I've photographed Kara's sisters, too. Maternity sessions, family sessions, watching this whole family grow in different seasons of life. It's one of my favorite parts of this job. You show up for photos and leave with people you're genuinely rooting for.

And then there's Tatum.

Born just two days before my own daughter, which somehow makes me even more emotional about watching her grow. She's one of those kids that's impossible to forget. So smart. So funny. So full of personality. The kind of little girl who keeps you on your toes and makes you laugh the entire session without even trying.

Some clients become familiar faces.

Some become people you're excited to hug when they get out of the car.

These two are definitely the second kind.

you know how sometimes a person is beautiful in real life and then the camera just kind of... humbles them a little?

yeah. not Courtney.

somehow she walked into her wedding day looking stunning and then got in front of my camera and looked even better. every time i turned around i was like "seriously? again?"

add in a perfect summer day, blue skies, a church ceremony, the biggest oak tree you've ever seen, and justin looking at her like he won the lottery, and it felt like one of those wedding days that came together without trying too hard.

just two people surrounded by the people who love them most, promising forever on a day that couldn't have been prettier if they had ordered it that way.

courtney + justin, thank you for trusting me with it all. your day was beautiful, but the way you two look at each other might've been my favorite part. 🤍

she spent most of the session doing whatever she wanted.

which, according to every toddler i've ever met, means the session was a complete success. ;)

it had been almost a full year since this family had professional photos taken.

a whole year.

when your babies are little, a year isn't just twelve months. it's first foods and bigger feet. new laughs. new teeth. a face that somehow looks different every time you blink.

we don't always notice the changes while we're living them. we see them every day, so they happen slowly to us.

until one day you look back and realize the baby you were holding doesn't exist anymore.

that's why photos matter.

not because life has to be perfectly documented, but because these seasons deserve to be remembered too. the ordinary tuesday kind of love. the grass stained kind. the "hold him a little longer" kind.

i'm so glad this sweet family pressed pause before another year slipped by.

i've photographed families beneath this tree for a few years now.

sometimes i wonder what it remembers.

how many mothers have stood here with babies on their hips, unaware they were living the days they'd one day miss.

how many toddlers have run circles around its trunk while parents whispered some version of, "please smile just one more time."

babies become big siblings.
little boys outgrow overalls.
parents collect gray hairs and wonder where the years went.

anlong after tiny shoes become bigger ones, and little hands stop reaching upward, the tree remains.
