This small 5x5 is my piece in the Woodstock School of Art students show. I made this encaustic piece in one of Regina Quinn’s great workshops! I named it Dawn Breaks, and I used pan pastels (for the first time), clear wax medium and a gold oil stick. Voila!

Margaret Drummond was one of the known mistresses of James IV of Scotland in the late 1490s, and the two had a daughter, Margaret Stewart, born in 1497.

Later tradition claimed that Margaret may have been secretly married to the king, but there is no solid contemporary evidence for that.

What is clear is that she held an important place in James IV’s life.
In 1501, Margaret Drummond died at Drummond Castle together with her sisters, Eupheme and Sibylla, after sharing a meal.

Their sudden deaths led to suspicions of poisoning, and that theory has followed the story ever since. But the truth is less tidy than legend.

No one was charged, no crime was proved, and historians remain cautious.

Deliberate poisoning has been suggested, but accidental food poisoning is also possible.

Because Margaret died before James IV married Margaret Tudor in 1503, her death was later folded into a larger political story.

It has often been said that her removal cleared the way for the Scottish king’s English marriage. It makes for a dramatic tale, but the evidence does not allow certainty.
Their daughter, Margaret Stewart, was placed in the Dominican convent of St Catherine of Siena in Edinburgh, where she later became prioress. Margaret Drummond herself was buried at Dunblane Cathedral, where her tomb is still linked to her memory.
She was never queen, but her name remains attached to one of the most persistent mysteries in the history of James IV’s court.
