On their way through another school day in Sierra Leone.
Their school uniform motto across the back sais it all:
“Quest for Knowledge.”
A small roadside observation from the JOKANDA series.
Resilient Innocence, a chapter from JOKANDA.
School uniforms, roadside encounters, family work, villages and the coast. These were children I met while traveling through Sierra Leone with Dr. Hawa during our humanitarian work with SLI and Doctors Without Borders.
Some were heading to school. Some were helping their families. Some simply noticed the guy with the camera and decided to investigate.
There was no production behind these photographs and very little direction. I photographed the people and situations I came across as they were.
JOKANDA began from that trip and has since become one of the most recognized bodies of my work, with photographs from the series recognized by National Geographic and awarded through 1x.
And once again, credit where it belongs: Dr. Hawa brought me there. Without him taking me along on that mission, none of this work exists.
