Grad photos have always been a challenge for me and it’s mainly due to the huge disconnect between what I and the client wants. I usually have something in mind but it sometimes doesn’t align with what they’ve imagined. I guess that’s where consultation and communication works best.

I’ve learn to balance between what I can give and what the client would like to see, because in many cases, what the client imagined may not completely compliment them. I’d shoot what they had wanted, but they’d feel pretty dissatisfied with the result. Being able to produce a composition that looks good to my client was what I had to learn.

So I kinda memorized specific stances angles that would look generally good on clients, in order to have a good photoshoot.

This photoshoot wasn’t really like this tho - they girls were really comfortable taking photos and already had an idea of what they wanted. Which made the process very smooth.

An Indonesian Queen [3|3]
If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I really enjoy this TV series called Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. It’s a series that’s, well, bizarre but also invigorating, unorthodox, and all around entertaining. One thing to note is that the creator of the series takes reference from many vogue and posh modeling images, posing his characters in bizarre positions and 「STANDS」. This allows the series to stand-out from many works alike and become a cultural set piece in this era.
So I decided to put that practice and recreate some of the iconic JoJo Poses that is seen in Araki’s work.
This entire shoot was also in collaboration with .fotografi Rezzi definitely helped me get back in my feet in photography and that is definitely something I am grateful for.

An Indonesian Queen [2|3]
We took these shots at DT Riverside, California, at around 6pm-7:30pm. It was originally supposed to be a mock Senior Photo Op but I was so bad at taking those, so we ditched the idea and went with a regular photoshoot. I wished we went earlier bc we lost moment of sunlight at nice places. We used a reflector in our photoshoot BUT it WASN'T a professional reflector. It was a white three panel board you use for science projects and fairs for like $6. It's way bigger, so much cheaper and works the same. If you dont have one, but one, its a necessity for filling in dark areas.

An Indonesian Queen [1|3]
I forgot how emotional photography is and not like a poetic sense, but in a literal way. Like this: at the start, you're excited, filled with anticipation and joy in hope of creating something decent, at the VERY least. Then after, you're like hella bummed bc the shots you took were nothing close to what you had in mind. Then, after a good while, you get those shots that were even better than you had imagined, making all that time worth while.
Getting back into photography made this ride much crazier, because I realized there was much I forgot - technique, composition, modeling, leading - so it was difficult to get that "all-worth-it" shots, so like most of the time I was in the bummed out part. It was demeaning & discouraging.
Having help from friends who were still familiar with photography was definitely a help. Things have changed to - culture has shifted - so I gotta do research more on what people want and so on and so forth.
Hopefully I get better, WTF I AM GONNA GET BETTER!!!!! Yall already know it!
