Plant, swing, clear. North County Pole Vault Club’s Elite group spent Saturday morning stacking reps at a friendly meet.

No scoreboard to chase. Just approaches, takeoffs and clean clearances, one jump at a time.

Taking the studio outside ish

Spent the day with a crew of creative minds setting up a full video podcast right here at Dog and Coffee Farm in Oceanside. It’s always cool seeing people come together, figure things out, and make the magic happen behind the scenes.

The gear was rolling, the coffee from Flip Coffee was hitting the spot, the puppies were doing their thing, and the camaraderie made the day even better. Sometimes, the best part of the production isn’t what’s in front of the camera. It’s the people behind it.

That’s creativity with a purpose, and a pretty good excuse to hang out with dogs and drink coffee!

Lots of movement, wellness, good people, great vendors, and plenty of positive energy throughout the day.

I was there with the Bookabl crew filming and photographing the event. Here’s a little highlight of the day.

One spot. That’s how close they came to nationals last year. They came back deeper and hungrier.

At the Cougar Challenge, in an extreme heat warning, Point Loma took 4th of 10 scoring teams with five scorers across the line within 40 seconds.

Next up: Highlander Invite, Oct 17. The chase is on.

This Sunday, we’re rolling a full mobile video podcast studio into the Solara Wellness Festival at Fox Point Farms in Encinitas.

Yes, we conducted reconnaissance for a podcast.

Route confirmed. Parking confirmed. Power confirmed. Waypoints named after candy bars, because apparently that’s how serious we are.

Here’s the deal:

VENDORS: Want to be part of the podcast? You don’t have to worry about cameras, microphones, lighting, or the technical stuff. We bring the studio, build the set, handle the production, and get you on camera. You just sit down and tell your story.

Pink in the stands. Brooms on the court.

Before the first serve, Gianna Callari handed over the game ball for her mom, a breast cancer survivor. Then she went out and scored the first point of the night. That pretty much set the tone.

No. 20 Point Loma 3, No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona 0.

The second set is the one I keep thinking about. Down late and staring at set point, they just refused to give it up. Three straight points, and Golden Gym lost it.

Kyra Miles owned the net with 11 kills and 7 blocks. Kira Federico dug up 20. Ila Rose came through with back-to-back aces right when the third set needed them.

Four wins in a row.

Next up: No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday.

When I started my microplastics project, I was actually researching artificial grass and all the rubber and plastic that can come with it.

Then I visited the San Diego Natural History Museum and went down a completely different rabbit hole.

The Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea exhibit takes actual plastic trash collected from beaches and turns it into giant sea creatures. Seeing bottles, flip-flops, toys, rope and other random pieces of garbage turned into art got me thinking about where all that plastic goes after we stop seeing it.

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t just disappear.

That visit changed the direction of my project. I started looking more at microplastics, our water, and how those tiny pieces of plastic can eventually make their way into the food chain.

So basically, we may be eating a lot more than what’s listed on the menu. 🤢

That became the focus of my graphic design project.

Funny how a trip to a museum can completely change your homework.

Apparently, my rabbit hole was made of plastic.

I started this project thinking about something pretty small.

Literally. Microplastics.

They’re tiny pieces of plastic that can make their way into our water, soil, food, and eventually the food chain. The problem is that they’re so small that once they’re out there, getting them back isn’t exactly a “grab a broom and sweep it up” situation.

So I turned my Creation Care project into a short motion graphics video to show how something we barely notice can become part of a much bigger problem.

But here’s the part I appreciate about PLNU: sustainability isn’t just something we talk about. There are people actually doing something about it.

Over the past year, PLNU has diverted food waste, expanded recycling efforts, collected soft plastics, and brought together students, faculty, staff, and community partners to work on sustainability. During one Welcome Week dinner alone, PLNU diverted 2.64 tons of organic waste, helping avoid an estimated 3 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. The campus also collected 93 pounds of soft plastics through the Plastic Beach pilot program.

And then there’s the 4th Annual Coastal Cleanup, where more than 400 volunteers collected over 500 pounds of trash and recycling from Sunset Cliffs. Apparently that included a couch, because apparently couches also enjoy the beach. 😂

That’s why I wanted my project to focus on microplastics. We can’t fix everything with one poster, one video, or one cleanup. But we can pay a little more attention to what we use, what we throw away, and where it eventually ends up.

Small problem. Big picture.

And yes, I needed this video too. Because apparently I can’t just make a poster and call it a day.
