Mr. and Mrs. Western Bluebird (although taken half a block apart so perhaps they are married to others). Mrs. Bluebird on the front porch of her nest in the lowest of the 3 cavities in the camphor tree. You can tell them apart by their coloring - as is often the case, the males are much more brightly colored.

And to continue the palm tree theme I seem to have going with today's posts, the opposite side of the owl's tree has a large beehive! There are a number of honeycombs that look abandoned, but a hole in the palm frond material shows a large group of bees (showing as I was able to lighten up the photo) - maybe there is newer honeycomb in the inner part of the palm tree. It seems the palm trees can hold many mysteries and critters.

I hadn't carried my camera on my dog walks for a while and yesterday I was really regretting that as there were lots of cool photography moments I missed. I saw two red-tailed hawks circling low and calling to each other and then a few blocks further I heard mockingbirds going crazy and flying around a palm tree. Usually, if you want to find a hawk or owl, a giveaway is other birds being agitated and squawking and divebombing in protest of their presence. Combine that with lots of bird p**p and owl pellets at the base of a tree and that usually means a nest or roosting place. At first I saw what I thought might be one of the hawks from earlier, but when I got closer, I saw that it was an owl! I thought it was a fledgling as I was sure that I could see the fuzzy head with little k***s instead of the adult feathered ears. I quickly hurried home, grabbed my camera and drove back down the street. The owl was still there, but through the camera it wasn't as young as I initially thought. Of course it was mostly sleeping at this point so all I could see was the body. Eventually it briefly looked around (this photo). I think it is a young one - the body has mature feathers, but the head doesn't have the adult ears yet - so maybe an older teenager?? I went back there today on my walk and didn't see any owls, but a neighbor said that sometimes they perch on a fireplace of a home near what I think is the nesting tree. I hope to have another sighting soon. :)

Sunflowers and palm trees - 6/3/26
On my dog walk this morning I saw a sunflower growing out of the top of a palm tree. I've seen a variety of plants growing out of palm trees, but not sunflowers. I figured that a squirrel probably took a seed up and hid it there, but then on the next palm tree I spotted this white-breasted nuthatch with a seed that it was "planting" in the palm material at the top of the tree so maybe he/she is the gardener. A bit further down, I spotted this squirrel with what I believe is a sunflower center (petals all gone) in its mouth.

We just got back from a trip to Maine for our daughter's graduation from Bates College (yeah, Sarah!). Our AirBnb was a cottage on a lake - such a beautiful setting! Our first morning there I happened to wake up at sunrise and look outside. The magical sunrise scene with mist rising over the water had me grabbing my camera and running out the back door to take some photos before going back to bed. 5/30/26

The Meadowbrook area of the Arboretum always has a beautiful show of color regardless of the season. It's also a great place to see rabbits and a wide variety of birds (not shown in this photo, though 😉 ). 5/23/26

Hummingbirds drink nectar and tree sap for energy, but they also eat bugs and spiders for protein. In the evening over Baldwin Lake, you can see multiple hummingbirds hovering briefly in the air before diving after the bugs that fly over the water - catching bugs in the air is called "hawking". I attempted to capture a few with my camera - a bit too far away with low light and fast moving subject, so they aren't the best photos, but still interesting. The photo in the worst focus is the one I wish were best - you can see the hummingbird's mouth open as it is about to sn**ch the bug (small blip of light in the photo) out of the air. While not a great photo, I thought I'd share to show the feeding behavior. 5/23/26
