I'll never forget showing up to a photo session and having a client say, "Oh, I didn't realize that was you. I was looking for someone with blonde hair."

This was about 5 years ago, when I had just started freelancing. At the time, I wasn't offering in-person or virtual consultations before booking photo sessions. So, clients were often meeting me for the first time on the day of their session.

I didn't think much of it at the time...until it happened again about a month later. At this point, I realized I needed to do something. So I did what I thought was the most logical thing to do at the time. I decided to dye my hair blonde again.

Mind you, I hadn't been blonde in almost a decade. So, this was no small feat. After two visits to the hair salon and nearly ten hours in the chair, my hair was finally blonde again...but I hated it. Looking back, I wish I had just invested in new professional headshots. Even though I offered this service to clients, I never thought I needed it myself.

Do yourself a favor: update your headshot. Your clients will thank you.

Photo for reference: Captured during my short-lived, "I want to be blonde again" era.

Branding Made Easy: February 2026

Tip #5: Struggling with daily posting? Instead of posting every day, set aside time each month or quarter to create content. Then schedule your posts to go out automatically. This isn’t a “set-it-and-forget-it” move; it’s a strategic one.

Tip #6: Has engagement with your followers dropped? Post daily stories! Aim for 60+ stories per month to boost engagement. Don’t overthink it—keep it simple. Share quick tips, behind-the-scenes moments, or questions to easily engage with your audience.

Tip #7: Struggling with content ideas? Turn to AI! It’s a great tool for generating blog topics, social media posts, or video ideas. Be sure to refine the suggestions and add your own personal touch. Your brand voice is what resonates with your audience, not copy and pasting.

Tip #8: Does your brand feel like it’s all over the place? Here are a couple of tips to bring it together: use 2-3 fonts and stick to 5-7 brand colors total. This rule of thumb helps keep your brand consistent, though it’s ok to bend the rules every once in a while.

I'm a brand designer, of course I can...

1. Explain the difference between a JPG and PNG, even though no one asked.
2. Fix your website without breaking the code...most of the time.
3. Talk to you about SEO for 30 minutes, just to leave you even more confused.
4. Spend two hours editing the tiniest details in a single photo that no one will ever notice.
5. Plan out social media content months in advance, just to scrap it all and start over for no reason.
6. Spend way too much time deciding between two different sans-serif fonts that look identical.
7. Organize all the files in my downloads folder, but why would I do that?
8. Nerd out for hours over analytics, KPIs, and metrics.
9. Frame the perfect image, then trip over the tripod and ruin everything.
10. Spend days adjusting the kerning between letters, just to reset it to the default.

Nothing compares to Denver farmers' markets. Every weekend from May through October, couples, families, and dogs gather at farmers' markets in Colorado to stock up on locally grown fruit and veggies, cottage foods, and homemade goods. I've had the pleasure of photographing numerous farmers' markets in the Denver Metro area over the years. I've included a few of my favorite images below.
