It’s finally Friday, and I’m thrilled to wrap up my recent White Sands post from Monday. I sincerely hope you all enjoyed this series as much as I did, especially with the exciting new editing touches! May you all have a blessed weekend.

P.S It’s only a week from now that I’ll be packing to leave for the Colorado Rockies next Saturday, where I’m told that the elk rut is getting intense.

“Where Silence Grows”

There are places where the world becomes quiet enough to notice the smallest things.

Beneath a sky painted in the last colors of day, a single desert plant holds its ground among endless waves of white sand. Small against the landscape, perhaps, but very much alive.

Sometimes resilience doesn’t need to make a sound.

I made a trip up to the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve this past weekend, mostly for a change of scenery and a little diversity from my normal owl watching. Although I’ll freely admit I was still keeping an eye out for owls, I came up empty in that department.

Even so, I feel like I accomplished what I went there for and came away with a few favorites that I thought you all might enjoy.

This little spring time prothonotary warbler was NOT about to let another male take over his territory. 😂

There was just one problem…

Springtime can bring out an incredibly territorial side of these beautiful little birds, and this guy repeatedly flew down, attacked the “intruder,” then returned to the top of my mirror to keep watch.

There’s something about the Rockies that never really leaves you.

Long after the snow melts from your boots and the mountain air fades from your lungs, a part of you stays behind—somewhere beneath those jagged peaks, along a winding river, waiting for the evening light to return.

And before long, you start feeling the pull again.

The early mornings.�The cold silence.�The distant bugle of an elk rolling through the valley.�And those final moments of daylight, when the sun slips behind the mountains and the entire landscape seems to glow before surrendering to the night.

In just a few short weeks, I’ll be heading west again.

Back to the high country.�Back to the rut.�Back to long days behind the camera and evenings spent chasing the last light.

Back to the Rockies.

And I have a feeling they still have a few stories waiting for me.

There are evenings when the sky doesn’t just put on a show it completely takes over.

With the water nearly perfectly still, the horizon almost disappears as the clouds, color, and fading light are reflected back like a mirror. Soft pinks and purples stretch from one edge of the scene to the other, making it difficult to tell where the sky ends and the reflection begins.

Moments like this are one of the reasons I never get tired of chasing light. You never really know what nature is going to give you.
