If the Red-Headed Woodpecker is named for his red head, what do you call a red-headed woodpecker that isn't a Red-Headed Woodpecker?

A Red-Bellied Woodpecker!

Named not for their crimson cap, but their gingery underbelly. At around 11 inches at their largest, Red-Bellies come in at the fourth largest woodpecker in North America, barely beating out their Red-Headed cousins with an inch of wingspan.

Hoping all creatures, big and small, are somewhere safe and warm for this near-record cold tonight.

This aptly named Red-Headed Woodpecker is enjoying the last rays of sunlight on this winter evening before the night sets in. The holes at the top and bottom of this tree branch are likely the entrances to his nest. Male Red-Headed Woodpeckers are usually responsible for pecking out the entryways, and while males and females are virtually indistinguishable, the black and white stripes at the bottom of his wings tells us this is a juvenile. It is safe to bet that this is a young male admiring his bachelor pad and readying his home for the ladies come spring.
