May I never grow tired of watching the rockets launch. I try to catch each one I can, and if I am able to swing it, I love heading out toward the beach with my camera in hand.
I ventured out last night to capture a photo of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket launch streaking over one of my favorite buildings in Brevard County, the Exploration Tower. I have attempted rocket photography several times to mixed results, some of which have been posted here on my page; however, I had yet to create a long exposure photo that made me feel like I really knew what I was doing.
To that end, I planned this photo with a combination of the Photo Pills app to visualize my camera’s field of view and where to position myself and Flightclub.io to study the trajectory of the rocket launch and make sure it lined up over the building properly. Honestly, I can’t be much more pleased with the result and I'm looking forward to getting this printed and up on my wall somewhere.
This is a 3-minute exposure, at F/11 with 6 stops of ND. I chose F/11 to minimize any diffraction issues from stopping down. It came out great minus one little issue, the 12mm lens was wide enough to see the frame of my ND filter holder (thankfully it’s mostly lost in the crop) which caused some funkiness on the edges of the photo.
