“A great portrait is a picture of the very core of your honest soul, if you can find it and let it out.”
On World Photography Day, we reflect on a question that remained central to Rodney Smith’s work: what can a photograph reveal that we cannot immediately see?
Part of his first monograph In the Land of Light: Israel, a Portrait of Its People (1983), Woman Jish, Israel reflects Rodney’s desire to get beneath the surface of things and find what he called “an enduring essence.”
Today, as we celebrate the art of photography, we invite you to look a little longer.
What makes a photograph stay with you?
