Rodney Smith’s legacy continues to be celebrated across Europe. Following the opening of The End in Málaga, Spain, his work is explored from a different perspective in The Alchemy of Light, now on view at Kunsthalle Vogelmann in Heilbronn, Germany.

Featuring photographs from every phase of his career, the exhibition offers audiences in Germany their first comprehensive look at the breadth of Smith’s creative vision. His "alchemy of light" — at once virtuosic and flawless — impressively demonstrates that photography is far more than a mere reproduction of reality.

With this exhibition, the Kunsthalle Vogelmann continues its series dedicated to significant 20th-century photographers.

Centro Cultural La Malagueta in Málaga, Spain, brings Rodney Smith’s world to life. Featuring 62 photographs from the artist’s photographic volume The End, including 20 shown in Spain for the first time, the exhibition invites viewers to look closely and explore Rodney Smith's distinctive vision of beauty, grace, style, and humor.

Here, The End speaks less of endings than of what can begin when we change the way we look at things.

TODAY in TORONTO: RODNEY SMITH and RICHARD AVEDON / Exhibit Openings

Today, we are delighted to celebrate the opening reception for Rodney Smith: World of Wonder at Izzy Gallery in Toronto. The exhibition brings together some of Smith’s most celebrated photographs and his singular world of elegance, wit, beauty, and wonder.

Across the city, Richard Avedon: Immortal — Portraits of Aging, 1951–2004 opens at The Image Centre, with nearly 100 portraits spanning five decades that confront aging with Avedon’s characteristic clarity and intensity.

What do Rodney Smith and Richard Avedon have in common? Both were sons of New York garment-industry families who inherited a finely tuned understanding of appearance and presentation—and transformed that visual inheritance into two profoundly different photographic worlds.

“A great portrait is a picture of the very core of your honest soul, if you can find it and let it out.”

On World Photography Day, we reflect on a question that remained central to Rodney Smith’s work: what can a photograph reveal that we cannot immediately see?

Part of his first monograph In the Land of Light: Israel, a Portrait of Its People (1983), Woman Jish, Israel reflects Rodney’s desire to get beneath the surface of things and find what he called “an enduring essence.”
