For his first institutional exhibition in Valais, MAPS member Matthieu Gafsou presents ELEGIES and continues his work and plastic experiments around the issue of global warming and our relationship to the world through a melancholic, or even unenchanted, presentation of glaciers.

For the past few years, the photographer has been gradually moving away from the shooting of objective reality using different processes, including physical and digital manipulation of his own prints. Between fascination and awe, he attempts to make sense of the rapid changes happening in our alpine landscapes, while confronting his own contradictions as an artist and an engaged citizen.
ELEGIES is a real invitation for contemplation and introspection. This new series of photographs, accompanied by an unpublished video made in Trient, aim to make us find a relative intimacy with our natural environments and with living people.

ELEGIES joins the large decentralized protest Watch the Glacier Go Away () which The Glacier Go away takes place during summer 2024 in a number of institutions and venues across Switzerland. artforglaciers.ch

EPIDEMIC in Magnus Art magazine #24 (May-June issue).
Massimo Berruti’s story about illegal toxic waste dumping in Southern Italy, photographed in the “triangle of death” area, within the country’s Campania Region. Berruti observes, “It is a phenomenon repeated all around the world, everywhere corporate interests match with institutional corruption. It represents one of the worst legacies that the civilized world can leave to the future generations to come.”

MAPS photographer John Trotter has been awarded one of the 2023 Yunghi Grants for photojournalism. He will be using the funding to go photograph the relationship of the Los Angeles/San Diego megalopolis to water from the distant Colorado River for his ongoing, longterm project about the human alteration of the river.

I am happy to announce the 2023 winners of The Yunghi Grant.

Congratulations to SIX photojournalists:
Russel Albert Daniels , Salt Lake City, Utah
Tamir Kalifa , Austin, Texas
Alejandra Rajal , Mexico City, Mexico
Simona Supino , Warsaw, Poland
John Trotter , Brooklyn, NY
Arin Yoon , Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

EIGHTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS in grants — $3,000 to each of SIX photojournalists — is being dispersed this year. I added a sixth grant this year because it’s always hard to just keep it to five!
