There are some places that change you when you visit them. This is one of those places—and it is currently for sale.
Everything about this place is art, and every inch of it seems to transport you through space and time. Each brick was made from the earth where it stands, formed and fired in dug kilns on the land, then placed by hand, three rows thick. Each beam, each floorboard, was cut, dried, and carved by hand from trees that once grew on the property.
It's secluded on 6 acres of untamed, ancient land. It breathes so much with the earth it stands on that the original owners actually gave it a name: Seclusaval.
And I can tell you that it is very much alive. It is something you have to experience to understand, although I hope these photographs can give you some sense of it. It is enough to make me cry just looking through them.
To be honest, I am at a point in my life where I understand that time is a much more complex thing than I ever imagined it could be. There are no rules, except change.
This house has carried so much history—both the light and the dark. It was built by people who were enslaved, after all. Can you even begin to imagine? All the lives lived here. The hands that shaped these bricks. The trees that became these floors. The generations that came and went while this place remained.
It is a testament to time, to God's creation, to humanity, and to the ongoing work of learning how to become better and more loving people. That is the paradox of life, and of this place.
So much of it remains untouched that it almost feels holy. And yet it holds everything—the beauty, the suffering, the craftsmanship, the mistakes, the love, the history—while still giving us the grace to learn from it.
We cannot erase history. But we can listen to it. We can honor it. We can learn from it. This is a place that invites you to do that and so much more.
I pray that Seclusaval finds the right caretaker. Someone who will continue nurturing it, learning from it, and allowing themselves to be changed by it. This is not a house that simply wants to be owned. It is begging for a reciprocal relationship. It asks for someone willing to steward it.
