Chamberlin Nature I love sharing the beauty of the world around me through my photography.

I have live webcams on my roof which show the views in front of my house in Pacifica, CA, which is about 15 minutes south of San Francisco. These include the Pacifica Pier, Sharp Park Beach and Mori point:

Barn Owl Babies, Pt Reyes 4-17-24. Careful, these photos might cause a cuteness overload. These little guys were so darned adorable. And in a stroke of good fortune, the setting sun shone right into the hole in the tree. Note that the date is not a typo - these photos are from over a year ago. The tree where they were located is fairly recognizable, and I didn’t want to risk jeopardizing the health of the nest by causing a bunch of people to seek it out and overwhelm them. So I decided to wait until this nest was no longer in use before posting. You have no idea how difficult it’s been “sitting” on these photos for so long.

I rarely post photos in a vertical orientation - I typically prefer landscape. But the shape of the hole in the tree and the orientation of the owls seemed to work much better vertically.

Great Blue Heron dining on Surf&Turf, Pt Reyes 4-29-26. This Great Blue Heron appeared to be in the mood for a bit of Surf&Turf. He first went for a mouse. After quickly sending that down his gullet, he went in search of some surf. He was rewarded with multiple fish and left well-satiated.

Red-winged Blackbird, Pt Reyes 4-29-26. This time of year the Red-winged Blackbirds are out in force and very ferocious at defending their nests and territories from any birds who dare to come near. My friend had seen them chasing and attacking some Great Horned Owls, so I was hoping to catch a bit of that. However on the day I was there, the owls had moved to a different location, further away, and never made an attempt to come around the area where they had previously been chased by the RWBs. I'm a bit bummed I didn't manage to catch that, but the RWBs are still a lot of fun, so I took a bit of video of them.

The first bit of the closeup portion looks like it was sped up, and then it transitions to looking closer to "normal speed". But in fact, the first part is normal speed and then it drops to 35% of normal speed. :-O Crazy, frenetic energy in these guys!

Sunset, Pacifica CA 5-3-26. I was looking at the sky before sunset and with all of the interesting clouds, I was hoping for a great sunset, though it was looking like the sun would duck behind the clouds well before sunset. I figured it might still be a beautiful sunset, albeit somewhat more subdued. And that is what we ended up getting. So enjoy a peaceful sunset with some nice ocean sounds.

Surfing the rocks at Rockaway Beach, Pacifica CA 5-3-26. I was out looking for a whale that was reported, but never found it. As I was walking back along the edge of the cliff on the south side of Rockaway I saw a surfer moving toward the point on the south side. I thought I'd get some video of him. That area requires quite a bit of caution as there are numerous submerged rocks that don't play well with surfboards or surfers. He had several nice rides despite the somewhat sloppy conditions.

Gray Whale puts on show at Pacifica Pier 4-25-26. This Gray Whale went right up to the pier, rolled around and performed a few more antics for all of the folks on the pier. Afterward when I went out on the pier to track where he went, I was inundated by "you just missed the best thing!" No, I didn't miss it, I just filmed it from a different vantage point. :-) I liked that the pier was in the background, providing a sense of place.

Chilling with the Whimbrels, Pacifica CA 4-21-26. As I mentioned in my earlier pelicans video, I was getting a bit stir crazy, and the familiar cry of the Hudsonian Whimbrels was calling to me. So I grabbed my camera and went down to the beach to spend some time with our beautiful shorebirds. The Whimbrel are among my favorite shorebirds to just sit and watch. And they disappoint me this day. They are just so much fun. This video is a bit longer than usual, and it only represents about 5% of the footage I shot. It was brutal trying to narrow down what I wanted to show, in part because I wanted to show it all!

If you stick through to the end, close to the end there's a little bit of "behind the scenes". You'll see a little bit of chaos with the camera as I'm trying to follow one of them in flight, and then you hear me exclaim "Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!" which is when a wave dumped a whole lot of water into my boots. I wear fairly tall, fully-waterproof boots so that I don't have to worry too much about working near the breaking waves. But this one was bigger than the rest, and I had my back turned (bad Dave!) as the bird had flown to the inland side of me. Oh well.

Rainbow 4/21/26. Another rainbow! Boy we've been getting a lot of them recently (not that I'm complaining!). I looked out my front window and saw that it started raining but the sun was out. My first thought "Bet there's a rainbow over the hills!" I had been working on my camera, so it wasn't quite ready to go. Instead I grabbed my iPhone and dashed up to my upper deck and sure enough there was a rainbow over the hills. And it was actually a double rainbow, though the double is pretty faint.

Squadron of Brown Pelicans, Pacifica CA 4-21-26. I haven't been able to get out and do much photography recently, especially "long lens photography" due in large part to a nerve issue in my neck that's causing pain in my neck, shoulder, arm and hand. Today I was getting a bit stir crazy, and decided I needed to get out by the ocean. I figured I could photograph the various birds while keeping an eye out for any Gray Whales that might be heading by. I didn't see any whales, but the Whimbrels, Pelicans and Surf Scoters kept me occupied and happy.

I'm starting with the beautiful and majestic Brown Pelicans soaring through the sky and taking a low pass over the waves. Watch your spacing guys!

Rainbow at the pier 4/20/26. As I was making my coffee, a little “spidey sense” went off in my head telling me to look up. Shortly after I did I saw a dolphin leap out of the water in a Sea World style move. I grabbed my camera and dashed out the door (in my PJs) but was unable to relocate the dolphins. I walked over to the pier (still in PJs - the fishermen have gotten used to the sight :-) ) so that I could get a better look both north and south, but was still unable to relocate the dolphins. However I did see a whale spout off the south side of the pier. And then shortly after that a rainbow appeared. A dolphin, a whale and a rainbow - what a great way to start the day!!

I didn’t get any shots of the dolphin or whale, but here are a few of the rainbow shots. I only had my long lens on my camera, so these are with my iPhone.
