Change. While God designed the change of seasons in nature and in our lives for us to observe, grow, and enjoy, change is something our human nature often resists. We like routine. We like familiar (especially me).
As I’m enjoying these first few days of fall, I’m reflecting on the change of seasons. After 14+ years of homeschooling, I’m finding myself on the cusp of a new season.
With our oldest daughter, Jocelyn, in her last year of university and our youngest, Kaitlyn, beginning her senior year, I am finding that I’m not needed as much. Kaitlyn’s schooling is pretty much taken care of through Running Start classes. Since she has her driver’s license, the “mom taxi” is close to being retired.
While we are still attending a homeschool co-op on Mondays where I teach a couple classes, the rest of the week my schedule is suddenly much lighter. Don’t get me wrong. I’m still balancing plenty, including household responsibilities, serving at our church, and being a support to my daughters and husband. But it’s different, and I’m really beginning to feel the shift.
All this to say, the leaves changing colors, the slightly chillier temps, the sun setting earlier—it’s all giving me pause for reflection. I’m so grateful for all the homeschool years, but I’m gradually getting ready to say goodbye to this chapter.
I’m thankful that God helps us through these transitions. Sometimes change comes gradually and other times it comes suddenly. But I believe he prepares us for each new season, regardless how slowly or quickly it’s ushered in. He has allowed my photography business to be on a “slow build” so that I’ve been able to be present in my daughters’ lives especially through these last crucial years of their schooling. I am so thankful for that. I know that he sees the future and where my business is headed. I’m also thankful for that.
While there’s certainly some bittersweet moments, I’m embracing the change of season. I’m leaning into the Lord for His perfect direction and guidance, to see where He wants to lead me. And I’m excited to see what this new season brings!▪️
