Grandma Moses was an inspiration to many...

“She started painting at 76... and ended up with her work hanging in the MoMA.”

My name is Anna Mary Robertson Moses, but the world came to know me as Grandma Moses.
I was born in 1860, on a remote farm in upstate New York.

As a child, I dreamed of painting.
But life put me to work early.
By the age of 12, I was already cleaning houses.
At 27, I was a mother.
I had 10 children. Only 5 survived.
I cooked, cleaned, raised children, planted crops.
My life was earth, silence, and resilience.

Then, at 76, already a widow and with my children far away,
I found myself alone.
My hands ached with arthritis…
but they didn’t tremble when I painted.

I bought my first paintbrushes with what little money was left from grocery shopping.
I painted farms, winters, horses, villages, picnics in the sun.
Not for fame. For memory.

I wanted people to remember what life used to be like.
Without noise. Without hurry.

One day, a collector saw my paintings in a little shop in town.
He bought them all.
Soon after, my work was exhibited at the MoMA.
And at 80, I appeared in Life magazine.

Between the ages of 76 and 101, I painted more than 2,000 pictures.

I never stopped feeling like a country woman.
But I learned that some things only bloom when we finally let them out.
