Nature Heals

This morning's sunrise was a stunner. Maybe it's coincidence, but every time I sit and take in a brilliant sunrise, a wonderful day always follows. The healing powers of nature are worth seeking out, every single day.

Leapfrog

As the nights fall down into the low 40's, the migration wheel begins to gain speed. Small groups of Killdeer have been gathering on the river's rocky beaches lately. They are filling their bellies and getting well needed rest as they begin their long southern journey. Some of these little beauties will travel as far as Venezuela, skipping over the year round residents of the southern states. This phenomenon is known as "leapfrog migration" and helps to maintain order within the species.
Killdeer are beautiful little shorebirds and I am glad to have witnessed their last dance here in upstate New York. Safe travels!

Mary and Cooper

It isn't very often that I get the chance to photograph these two perched close to one another. Mary is at left.
There are hawks, falcons, Osprey, and eagles passing through here during the fall migration, and these two have made their presence known. Whatever it takes to protect all that they have built here. This photo is very dear to me, and certainly one of the best of them both in the same frame.

Foggy October Sunrise

It was 6:15am when I left the dock yesterday, heading over to pick up patrons for the early bird wildlife tour. The fog was heavy bur burning off nicely, and we had an amazing tour. The October sunrises are already stunning and are just going to get better. Such a great time of year. I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful weekend!

Fighting Falcons!

While observing the American Kestrel, (at left), hunt from this railroad sign, the slightly larger Merlin charged in. The Kestrel held it's ground, never leaving his perch. Never in my life would I have expected to see these two falcon species fight for turf, let alone grab photos.
Keep your eyes to the skies this time of year as raptor migration rushes through. Another reason to love this time of year.

Wing Strength

Watching the Great Blue Herons glide in and land never gets old. This one dragged one foot at a time in the water in an attempt to slow down before landing, a foot brake if you will. I will share that photo in another post. It's not just the six foot length of their wings that's impresses me, but more importantly, its how broad(wide) they are. It's the extra width that helps them create more lift to carry that large body, and cruise using slow, effortless wing beats. A well engineered species that I love to photograph.

Was it something I said?

As I drifted past this rather unusual scene, the Double-crested Cormorants took flight. The Great Blue Heron just waited, and was then able to enjoy the log all to himself. I hope you all enjoyed the weekend!

Heavyweight

I don't normally see the Double-crested Cormorants this time of year. It is usually during spring migration that I see them, gathering here in large groups as they head towards the great lakes to breed. For the last couple weeks this juvenile has been here, offering me some unique photo opportunities. I know they are a somewhat controversial species, but I find them very interesting to observe and photograph. This photo shows the young Cormorant taking flight, but due to its heavy weight, struggling to leave the water. Cormorants don't have as much waterproofing, which enables them to dive to depths of up to thirty feet to capture their prey. However, this means they have to dry out after each dive, or taking flight can become a challenge. A very interesting species that I am glad to see lately.
