I have been lucky to have some intimate encounters with this female Ruby-throated Hummingbird lately. She allowed me to get close enough for some nice photos while she preened and stretched out. Such a beautiful girl.

Week Eight
Mary preens while the triplets stir about the nest below.
I was able to spend some time observing the nest in last nights golden hour sun. Some very memorable moments were logged and I will share more as I get edits done.

Two Beavers hauling some Japanese knotweed back to the den. As much as I appreciate them choosing to forage on this heavily invasive plant, I'm afraid they are helping to spread it even further. Either way I enjoy seeing them remove some of it from the riverbank. Notice the size of the one in the background, a very large beaver.

A Cedar Waxwing leaves its perch. Thanks to all of the spring insect activity, I have been able to observe and photograph these beautiful birds over the past few days. A very social species that are often seen sharing food with other Waxwings. I have seen them perch in a line and send food to one another. Another reason to love spring.

I'm finally starting to see some Great Blue Heron's. There is a rookery a few miles downstream and most of them stay in that area until their young have fledged the nest.
Anyway, it's nice to have them back! They have always been a favorite subject of mine to photograph.
Just so ya know, this bird does have two legs. The other one is tucked up out of view in order to rest it.

Nest News

Mary perches above the nest, allowing her extra large triplets to have room to move about. Here we are in the week seven, and as you can see they are getting bigger by the day. Although they will still occasionally get offered bits of food by the adults, at this stage they are able to feed themselves. This allows more time for hunting and less time spent in the nest having to feed them, a fair trade as their appetites grow as quick as their size.
I'm seeing them flap their wings consistently now and a few times I've even seen them try to rise off the nest floor under their own power. Such an exciting time. Lots more to come!

Head of Security

Cooper takes a break from hunting the river yesterday. He was cruising low to the river when he quickly rose up to this perch allowing me a few quick photos. He is one busy eagle right now having to supply most of the meals to three, now seven week old, eaglets. It was nice to see him take a break. He preened, and stretched for a half hour or so, then took flight to hunt for the next meal delivery.
I want you to notice how slender and short he is compared to Mary. He is built for speed and as I've said many times, has amazing in flight capabilities. Earlier yesterday morning I heard cries from the nest. I looked up to find a juvenile flying over. Seconds later, Cooper flew in and chased off the young intruder. It was a quick, very deliberate attack and that juvenile narrowly escaped Cooper's grasp.
This guy is an absolute killer and has proven to more than pull his weight for this bald eagle team. It's rare for me to get an opportunity to photograph him like this as the head of security doesn't sit still very long.

Enjoy this Memorial Day

Proud Mary perched with the Black Cherry blossoms.
This is a recent favorite of mine, and a fitting tribute photo for Memorial Day.
Let us not forget those who gave all to protect the freedom we get to enjoy every day. I am forever grateful for all of those that have served our country. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Prints are available, simply send me a message for details. Thanks in advance for your support of this page.
