This is such a great full-circle moment and I could not be more excited or proud! More than 20 years ago Amanda Zehr was a college student who stopped by the studio and asked if I needed help. She became my first assistant. Today during her very successful Ottawa's Third Friday maker’s market she will be hosting a soft opening of her second Open Space Art Gallery & Studios at 722 LaSalle Street in Ottawa, my first studio location. Help make Christmas in downtown Ottawa magical this year. Sponsor a Community Christmas Tree, and you'll not only get to decorate a tree in Washington Square Park for the holidays, but you'll also help us make a substantial donation to our friends at the Community Food Basket of Ottawa.

You provide the decorations- this is a great opportunity for local businesses, community organizations, and families to share what makes them unique and will be viewed by thousands of residents and visitors all season long.

Trees are $150 each. This covers the cost of the tree (plus delivery!), lights, and a sign in front of the tree, and a $100 donation to the Community Food Basket. Our goal for 2026 is to donate $10,000, but we can't do it without you!

Last month I entered a car in a pinewood derby fundraiser for the Marseilles Cub Scouts. Violet had asked me, so I found my brother’s old derby car from the early ‘80s in my mom’s basement and repainted it. After adding the studio logo I wanted a shiny finish so I used some clear coat nail polish. I think it did the trick!
Yesterday Violet delivered my derby car along with an award for “Best Brakes.” Considering there are no brakes on the car, I assume this means my car was the slowest in the derby. I couldn’t be more proud!

It’s happening. Today. The last of the Ridgland Farms beagles are being released. The final 155 of 2,000 beagles who have never experienced their paws on grass are gaining freedom today thanks to organizations like Beagle Freedom Project. When I joined nearly 1,000 activists outside the chainlink fence at Ridgland Farms in April for an attempted open rescue, the collective hope turned to disappointment. After a standoff lasting hours, with many tear-gas canisters launched into the crowd, it became clear that not one dog would be experiencing freedom that day. However the brave people who endured rubber bullets and pepper spray, those of us who stayed through rounds of tear gas, people showing support through signs and delivering cases of water, we were the tipping point I am proud to have helped.
I want to help once more by raising money for Beagle Freedom Project and for specifically the Ridgland Farms dogs rescued through their program.

How cute is my mom? She has gotten a few fabulous outfits recently at Luxx Boutique across the street from the studio. So, obviously we had to do a photo shoot! Even Lou was working it for the camera. We had so much fun! Mom was the perfect model, bringing in all of her outfits steamed on hangers. We came up with a game plan, I placed her outfits in order in the new studio dressing room and we busted a move chasing the golden hour. Thanks to the lush gardens on my Main Street block, we didn't have to go far searching for the perfect location. This was so much fun! Denise Barr

Lou and I had a busy day in Washington Square! This afternoon we made the rounds at the 5th Annual Children’s Business Expo sponsored by Prairie Fox Books. I love seeing all of the creative young entrepreneurs! This evening we rode the trike back downtown for Music in the Park. While the cicadas sang along this group of kids amassed quite the collection of shells. It was a good summer day in the town of two rivers!

Anyone who knows me knows I love dogs. This past spring I joined a few hundred activists in Wisconsin in an attempted open rescue at a beagle breeding and testing facility called Ridgland Farms. Although we were not successful that day in April, I believe our actions and the media attention was the tipping point in pushing this facility to close this month and surrender the last of the 2,000 beagles who only knew a life in a cage with no fresh air in their lungs, no sunshine on their faces and no grass beneath their paws. The Beagle Freedom Project is one of the organizations to step in and help with this massive rescue that has taken months. Please join me in raising awareness and funds for this cause close to my heart.
