Three kids. Three completely different stages. One mom who almost said “let’s wait a little longer.”

I’m so glad she didn’t.

Because here’s the thing nobody tells you. There is no magic age where family photos get easier. The baby becomes a toddler who runs. The toddler becomes a big kid with opinions. The big kid becomes a tween who has to be bribed with Starbucks.

You’re not waiting for easier. You’re just waiting.

And while you wait, you’re the one missing from the camera roll.

This mom showed up in a field on a Friday night with a baby, a boy, and a tween.

Nobody was perfectly behaved. The baby wanted down. The kids wandered off to play with the trail viewfinders mid session. Many Swedish fish bribes happened.

And every single one of those things became my favorite photos.

Your kids don’t need you to be photo ready. They just need you in the photo.

Save this for the next time you catch yourself saying “maybe next year.”

POV: your BTS guy is 5 😂

I watched my son’s footage from a session last night and I could not stop laughing.

He’s five. He had the glasses on, a snow cone in his hand, and the entire time he’s just telling me how cute the dog is while blowing me kisses and I’m over there photographing this couple who clearly adore each other.

And that was the whole thing. A couple in love, their dog, my kid and his snow cone narrating all of it.

It was just so real. That’s the part I never want to forget, and it’s the part I want to catch for you too 🤍

She almost didn’t book this session.

She told me she wasn’t sure she’d feel comfortable in front of the camera. That she didn’t know if she’d “look good.” And I just kept thinking…

oh, I cannot wait for her to see what I see.

Because what I see is a woman who is growing an entire human being. Who is strong and soft and so completely in the in-between of one of the most sacred, raw seasons of her life.

And she deserves to have proof of that.

Real, beautiful, forever proof.

This is literally why I do what I do. I want every woman who stands in front of my camera to walk away and think:

wait…is that really me?

Yes. That is really you. It always was.

Golden hour in the wildflowers with her was everything 🤍

We’ve got lots of new faces here so let’s become besties.

Hi, I’m Rachel. I will show up to your session in florals with a black iced coffee that is somehow always with me, and I will probably cry a little over your family’s love. Fair warning.

Here’s my whole WHY:

I became a photographer because of the photos that don’t exist. The ones where my mom should have been. She packed the snacks, wrote the lunch notes, made the whole day happen, and she’s in almost none of our photo albums.

So now I think about that every single time a mom tells me she’ll get in the next round of pictures. Once she loses the weight. Once her hair cooperates. Once she feels more like herself.

Mama, no. (Okay that’s the only time I’ll say it, I promise.)

Your kids are not going to remember your arms the way you see them. They’ll remember that you were THERE. That you pulled them close. That you were in the story instead of just running it from behind the camera.

What I actually do:

I photograph moms and families around Chicago and the suburbs, and I’m obsessed with the real in-between stuff. The way he reaches for you. Golden light in your actual messy living room. Zero “everyone look here and say cheese.”

You do not have to wait until you feel ready. You are already so worth remembering, exactly like this.

If that hit somewhere in your chest, hi, we’re going to be friends. Stay a while. You’re always welcome 🤍

The front door flying open before I even got my camera up.

A couch pile that turned into a full family dog pile.

A mud kitchen in the backyard she takes very seriously.

Lego and magnatile building that rivals a contractor.

A popsicle melting faster than she could eat it.

This is a regular Sunday afternoon at their house.
And I just got to show up and document it.

This is what an in-home session actually looks like. Not posed. Not perfect. Just your people, in your space, doing exactly what they do.

The barefoot chaos and the loud laughter and the way your kids still somehow pile on top of you even when there’s a whole couch.

That’s the stuff worth keeping.

If you’ve ever thought “we should really get photos done”, then this is your sign. Your home, your real life, your story.

Let me show you just how beautiful your life really is 🤍

Some sessions just feel like hanging out with your friends.

That was this one.

From the second we started, I knew their love story was going to be so easy to tell, because it’s just so them. Genuine, fun, a little wild, deeply rooted.

They’re already incredible parents & the way they love each other is exactly the kind of love their kids are going to grow up knowing.

A caterpillar made an appearance. Shoes came off in the creek. There was a whole lot of laughing.

And they asked me to be their forever photographer.
I don’t take that lightly. Not even a little.

This is why I do this 🤍
