The nest was empty again this morning.

After spending so much time following this eagle family, I headed out to see if I could find the juveniles and make sure they were doing okay. I was relieved to find one of them nearby with Mom. Over the last few days, it looked like she was teaching the young eagle how to hunt, and this morning they were perched above a pond, possibly working on the next lesson—how to fish.

I only found one juvenile today, and I'm still hoping the second youngster is nearby and doing well too.

It's amazing to watch these young eagles take their first steps toward independence. The nest may be empty, but their story is far from over.

Today I checked on the juvenile eagles in Orwigsburg, PA and witnessed something interesting.

One youngster spent quite a while watching its sibling higher in the tree. Then an adult eagle arrived at the nest, and shortly afterward the juvenile seemed to gather its courage. After plenty of looking, watching, and thinking, it finally launched into the air and made a short flight to join its brother or sister.

Another small step toward independence.
