With sit-spots and bird follows, I had an average pace of about 45minutes/mile today and ended the walk with 58 species. One of the species I had high numbers of, were these Black-and-White Warblers.

While on a walk with my camera, I had been having a pretty great day with the spring arrivals, but after getting up onto the ridge I had a real gem moment.
On Sachems Head, the overlook has you able to look down at the pines instead of up, so it’s an awesome spot to get to see the species that tend to prefer the high crowns of the trees. When I got up there I continued down the trail a ways and found one of my favorite spots, tucked a little out of sight but with a great view. I sat down, took off my gear, and suddenly realized the Blackburnian Warbler I had been hearing was actually really close. As I started taking pictures he just kept getting closer and closer, singing and foraging the whole way, until he stoped about 3 feet from my face. I was pretty much just holding the shutter the entire time, until he was so close my camera was useless. I held my breath for what felt like minutes, until he zipped right past my ear and over the shoulder.
As he continued on his way, I realized that this was the same spot that I got my first picture of a Blackburnian Warbler, which (after a lot of searching) I found in a 2012 photo folder.
Tis the season for colors, songs and surprises.

Yesterday’s FOY for me was the super fun Louisiana Waterthrush. I say fun, because they love the darkest, thickest pockets of wet footed forest, and as a result are consistently a hard one to get a good picture of. It often leads to me just sitting in the brush for a while, and I really appreciate that.

While working on things in the yard, I had a little bird land near me, and was very surprised after my double take. This is a leucistic Chipping Sparrow!
Leucism is a genetic condition where an animal produces less pigment, so it appears pale or patchy instead of its normal coloration. Unlike albinism, the eyes stay their normal color because pigment loss isn’t complete.
It’s exciting to have this visitor in the neighborhood, and I really hope the right partner and nesting site are nearby for em.

After a strong rain, a committee of about 30 Turkey Vulture took up spots to spread wings and dry out a bit. Pretty amazing getting to see their full size so clearly.

While spending some more time at the canal, a long and dramatic Bufflehead dispute started up. The guy in front could not get a second of peace, after apparently getting a bit too close to the other’s girlfriend.
