PART 2 of this female Anhinga's incredible struggle with a catch that was simply too big to swallow. 🐟

She fought hard to keep her catch, repeatedly trying to reposition the fish for one final swallow… But this time, the fish was simply too big. After exhausting herself trying to make it fit, she finally dropped her prey back into the water.

In nature, catching your prey doesn't always mean getting the meal.

Cool fact:
Anhingas hunt underwater by using their sharp, spear-like bills to catch fish. Once they surface, they often flip or reposition the fish so they can swallow it headfirst, which helps the fins fold down instead of catching in their throat.

Eclipse Progression: 🌒🌘🌓🌗🌖🌔📸✨

*Partial Phases (Top and Bottom): The sequence begins at the top left where Earth's shadow (the umbra) first starts to cover the Moon, showing a bright, curved crescent of direct sunlight.

*Totality (Middle): As the Moon moves deeper into the shadow, it turns a deep coppery-red or orange color—commonly called a "blood moon". This hue happens because sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere is filtered and bent toward the Moon, scattering blue light while letting red light pass through.

*Reemergence: The bottom-right phases show the Moon exiting the shadow as direct sunlight returns to the lunar surface.

Patiently waiting... 🐟

The Green Heron is one of the very few bird species in the world that uses tools to hunt. Instead of just waiting for food, they will deliberately gather small items like twigs, feathers, insects, or even bread crusts and drop them onto the water's surface. They then crouch completely still and wait for unsuspecting small fish to swim up to investigate the "lure" before striking with lightning speed.

Caught a Gulf fritillary taking a quick lunch break on the passionflower vines.

*Toxic Defense: The caterpillars feed on passionflower leaves, absorbing toxic chemicals that make both the caterpillars and adult butterflies unpalatable to predators.

*Underwing Disguise: While the top of their wings is bright orange, the undersides feature brilliant, iridescent silver spots that help them blend into shadows when resting.

Hiding in plain sight, tangled up in the details. 🌿🦅👀✨

The striking red eyes of the Black-Crowned Night Heron actually change color as they grow. Young herons are born with yellow eyes, which gradually deepen to orange and eventually turn a vivid, ruby red once they reach full adulthood.

female Anhinga: a highly specialized underwater hunter. Because anhingas actually spear fish directly through the side using their razor-sharp, dagger-like bills, they face a unique dilemma once they surface: the fish is completely impaled on their beak. To actually eat it, the Anhinga must flip its head back, toss the fish into the air, and expertly catch it so it can be swallowed whole and head-first. Swallowing it head-first ensures that the fish's sharp fins and spines fold down flat, preventing the bird from choking.
