Meet Leslie, a woman who knows a thing or two about showing up, putting in the work, and sticking with what she believes in. For more than 28 years, Leslie has been part of Small GovCon Solutions, helping small business owners navigate the world of federal contracting. That kind of longevity doesn’t happen by accident. It takes knowledge, dedication, confidence, and a whole lot of heart.

“This year has been one of transformation for me. In March, I made the decision to leave my federal government job after being a civil servant for 28 years to take a leap of faith and launch my own consulting business. The mindset shift that needed to occur for this to happen was no small feat.

I have always been risk-averse and financially responsible; I am THAT person. Upon my college graduation with a shiny new degree in Marketing, I immediately shied away from all of the entry-level commission-only sales jobs. Nope, that was not going to work for me - I needed a dependable salary with benefits and a retirement plan! Fresh out of University of Central Florida, I immediately found a federal service position working for the Department of Defense. My absolute favorite assignment during my federal career was when I was the Director of Small Business Programs for the Navy office here in Orlando. I held that particular position for over 9 years. During the course of my time in that position, I met so many incredible small business leaders in the military training and simulation ecosystem - it is like a huge extended family.

But after gaining so much incredible experience over the years in my federal job, it began to feel suffocating when I had to return to the office 100% of the time after being able to work from home most days since 2020, not to mention the looming dark cloud of cuts to the federal workforce. It was impossible to remain positive or productive. After a few short weeks, I made the decision to leave the comfort of what had been a largely familiar, steady, and stable career to become the captain of my own ship. I cashed in my guaranteed paycheck and paid time off for freedom to do things on my own

“When we are young, we map out what we think our lives will be and how it will look. Setting forth on a journey we embark on a path to find a career, a home and a family of our own. Age has shown me the best laid plans are hardly the end result. But what’s beautiful in that, is the end results can actually become far more beautiful and rewarding than anything you dreamt of as a young adult. My path came with set backs, challenges, pain, and lots of tears, but it also came with self-discovery, success and the courage to embrace life to its fullest.

I am proud of my journey. As an only child, first generation college graduate, entrepreneur and industry leader, my life, in many ways doesnt fit the female “norm”, but I continue to work daily to make a genuine impact on the people around me and for my community. My career path changed a few times from my younger years until I found something that embraced my passion and my skillset.

✨ 40 over 40 : Yulia ✨

Meet Yulia! 💕 A woman who has spent years working in multilingual childcare centers, pouring her time, patience, and heart into helping little ones learn, grow, and feel cared for. After spending so much time taking care of everyone else, we think it’s pretty special that she took a moment to celebrate herself. Here’s her story 🙌

I have always dreamed of working with children. From the very beginning, it came naturally to me — I could feel their emotions, and they could feel mine. When my first daughter was born, I realized I wanted to create a special place for children’s growth and development, and to pour my heart into this work.

That’s how, 20 years ago, my career in early childhood education began. It started with a small home daycare for just six children, and over time grew into two centers serving nearly a hundred kids. Every single day, I find joy in seeing the happy faces of children and their parents. Even challenges and problems become easier to handle when you truly love what you do. I am a proud mother of two wonderful children: my daughter is now 22, and my son is 16. They have been by my side all these years, helping and supporting me in my work. After 30 years of marriage, I went through a divorce. It was a good marriage, but I felt it was time for change. Spreading my wings allowed me to see life from a fresh perspective. Today, I live, create, and enjoy every single day!

The beauty of this project is to show everyone that it’s not just what you see in the mirror. It’s the years of hard work, the lessons learned, the people you’ve impacted, and the woman you’ve become along the way. ✨

✨ 40 OVER 40: SANDY ✨

The older she gets, the more comfortable Sandy becomes in her own skin, and honestly? That looks GOOD on her. 🔥 With 20+ years in Architectural Engineering and a career focused on Capital Planning & Strategy, Sandy knows a thing or two about building things that last. 😉

But her greatest accomplishment? Becoming more confident, grounded, and unapologetically herself with every year. Her story on the next slide ✨➡️

If you’d asked 18-year-old me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I probably would’ve said “fashion puzzle solver”—which, sadly, isn’t a real job title (yet). I was the first in my family to go to college, and while I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do, I knew I couldn’t let my parents down. They worked incredibly hard to give me and my siblings a shot at a better life, and skipping college felt like returning a gift unopened. I loved art, fashion, and the thrill of putting things together like a puzzle (is there a word for that? Spatial stylist? Design detective?). But I also wanted something practical—something that could support a future family and maybe even help my parents retire somewhere with palm trees.

So I landed on architectural engineering, which felt like the perfect blend of creativity and logic. After a few internships designing kitchens and labs, I took a six-month contract as a drafter—basically drawing floor plans on fancy software. I finished the work in half the time (because apparently caffeine and curiosity are a powerful combo), and my manager, recognizing I had more to give, introduced me to the facilities architect in a different department within the same company. That connection opened the door to a pharmaceutical campus the size of a small city, and a new manager who took me under his wing. That six-month gig turned into a 20-year career of planning labs and manufacturing spaces, working with brilliant scientists and engineers, and learning that the key to designing great spaces isn’t just knowing where the walls go—it’s listening to the people who’ll be using them.

For seventeen years, Dawn poured her heart into building a life with her husband, raising three beautiful children, and embracing the roles of wife and mother. For Hilarie, aging isn’t something to fear, it’s something to celebrate.She believes getting older is a true gift. With each passing year, she’s become more grounded, more balanced, and more confident in who she is. That kind of confidence doesn’t happen overnight, it comes from experience, resilience, and embracing every season of life. Here’s her story:

“For me, life has been less about following a straight path and more about learning how to rise, rebuild, and reinvent along the way. I spent 16 years climbing the corporate ladder, eventually serving as Vice President of Sales for multiple companies. After years of a rewarding and challenging career building other people’s businesses, I felt a pull to take everything I had learned — my energy, creativity, and drive — and pour it into building something of my own. That turning point led me into real estate, where I discovered not just a career but a calling. I wanted to create a business I could be proud of and a legacy for my children, one built on hard work, integrity, and vision. Along the way, I’ve taken risks and pursued goals others told me I couldn’t achieve — and that only fueled me to push harder and make them happen.
