When was the last time everyone was in the photo?

Not just the kids. Not a quick phone snapshot where someone is missing. A beautiful portrait with the people who make up your family right now. ❤️

Fall is one of my favorite times for family portraits—the warm light, beautiful colors, and cooler evenings make the perfect backdrop. And whether your family is 4 people or a whole crew like this one, we’ll create a mix of groupings so you have photographs you’ll actually want to print, frame, and keep.

My fall calendar is now open for families, extended families, and multi-generational sessions in the Orangevale/Folsom/Sacramento area.

🍁 Fall dates are limited because I only photograph evenings and weekends, and October tends to fill quickly.

This Grandparents Day, let’s change that.

I’m opening just 5 spots for my special Generations Portrait Event — a chance to capture Grandma with the people who call her Grandma. ❤️

When was the last time Grandma or Grandpa was actually in the pictures instead of standing behind the camera watching everyone else make memories?

These are the photos that might feel ordinary today, but someday they’ll be absolutely priceless. ❤️

In honor of Grandparents Day, I’m offering a special limited portrait event celebrating grandparents and the kids who adore them.

Bring Grandma. Bring Grandpa. Bring ALL the grandkids! Let them laugh, cuddle, be silly, and simply enjoy being together. I’ll take care of capturing it.

☀️ Confession from a sunset-loving photographer: 10 a.m. sunshine is NOT usually my first choice. 😂

But sometimes the schedule says morning, the sun says GOOD MORNING EVERYONE, and you make it work. And I’m so glad we did. 🌻

We headed to the gorgeous sunflower fields at Andelin Family Farm in Sparks, Nevada for these photos, and even with that bright summer sun, we found beautiful pockets to create some seriously fun images.

And then little sister tagged along… which obviously meant she needed a few photos too. ❤️

Since big sister was a softball 🥎 player, I brought one of my vintage baseball outfits for little sis to try and, well… she loved it so much she didn’t want to take it off. 😂⚾️ I think we may have discovered her new personality.

This is exactly the kind of session I want to do MORE of — somewhere fun, somewhere different, somewhere that feels like an experience instead of just “stand here and smile.”

Hi, I’m Cathy! 👋 And if you’re new around here, consider this the slightly chaotic official introduction. 😂

I’m the red-haired human behind Cathy Kurtz Photography, and I’m happiest with a camera in my hand, pretty light in the sky, and people in front of me who swear they’re “not photogenic.” Challenge accepted. 📸

A few things you should probably know about me:

❤️ Family is everything.
📸 I believe photos should feel like you, not like you’re trying to recreate somebody else’s Pinterest board.
🌅 Golden hour makes me ridiculously happy.
🥤 Coffee? Absolutely not. Give me Pepsi, lemonade or something fruity with boba.
🧶 When I’m not photographing people, there’s a good chance I’m crocheting, crafting, reading, or dreaming up my next project.
😂 I’m a little quirky, I laugh a lot, and photo sessions with me are definitely not quiet, serious affairs.

Most of all, I love creating bright, colorful, classic photographs of the people you never want to forget exactly as they are right now.

**Okay, Sacramento-area families… where are we going this fall? 🍂🎃**

This photo is SEVEN years old, and sadly this little pumpkin farm isn’t around anymore. But looking at it makes me want to do more sessions that feel like *this.*

Not just “meet me at a pretty location and smile.”

I want to wander a pumpkin patch with your family for an hour while the kids hunt for the perfect pumpkin. I want the snuggles, the laughter, the piggyback rides, the ridiculous pumpkin someone insists is coming home with you… and yes, we’ll sneak in a few everyone-looking-at-the-camera photos too. 😉

Then when pumpkin season is over? Let’s do it at a Christmas tree farm. Or your favorite park. Your family’s property. A cute downtown area. A farm. An orchard. Somewhere completely unexpected that means something to **you**.

In fact, I LOVE when clients bring me location ideas. Be different! Your family photos don’t have to look like everyone else’s.

When you’re 4, apparently your shoes have VERY specific job descriptions. 😂

The pretty shoes? Those went with the other pants.

These shorts clearly required the mismatched Crocs. And honestly, who was I to argue? 😂

Sometimes the best thing we can do during a photo session is stop worrying about making everything perfectly coordinated and just let kids be exactly who they are.

She had just started TK that week and was absolutely loving it, complete with plenty of opinions about her wardrobe. And I love that this photo captured all of it: the sweet smile, the confidence, the personality… and those fabulous Crocs. 💕

Because someday, the things that make you laugh right now might be the exact things you want to remember most.

Let them wear the Crocs. ❤️

When did they suddenly start looking so grown up? 🥹

Senior year has a funny way of sneaking up on you. One minute you’re taking first-day-of-school pictures on the front porch, and somehow you blink… and you’re scheduling senior portraits.

That’s one of my favorite things about photographing seniors. I want their photos to feel like them - beautiful and polished, but still natural, comfortable and recognizable to the people who love them most.

Because these aren’t just pictures for a graduation announcement. They’re the photographs Mom is going to look at years from now and think, that was her. Right at the beginning of everything. ❤️

Class of 2027 parents - has it hit you yet that this is senior year?!

What if a photo session could help your tween see herself the way you see her?❤️

The tween years can be such an in-between season. They’re not little kids anymore. They’re not quite teenagers and suddenly they’re a whole lot more aware of themselves and how they look. That’s one of the reasons I love photographing this age.

A portrait session give your tween a chance to be the star for a little while. No school pictures smile, no awkward phone selfie, no comparing herself to everyone she sees online. Just beautiful portraits that let her see “Hey… That’s me. And I look pretty amazing.“

And can we talk about the Sailor Bar sunset?!😍 This Fair Oaks location is one of my favorites for warm colorful portraits. Bonus: the geese are always happy to accept your breadcrumbs.😂 just don’t linger too long after sunset unless you’d also like to donate blood to the local mosquito population. 🩸
