Wattled Crane in Flight
One of the tallest standing cranes in the world is found in the Okavango Delta. Here we experienced a morning time fly-by with wings outstretched and a beautiful profile of the wattled crane. If you enlarge the image, you can see the white wattle, red facial skin, and the yellow eye. This is a youngster with an underdeveloped wattle.

Cute
The energy, the eagerness to learn, the innocence, and the cuteness. All these qualities of youth, be it human or animal, make them attractive to photograph. And I have a hard time resisting doing so, even when I have hundreds of images of young animals in my library. Just happy to share another one with you. Enjoy it with me.

Trail of Dust
A sandhill crane is taking off to its roosting place for the evening. As it heads out, the accumulated dust from the day's foraging is shaken off its feathers while the setting sun backlights it. I chose to leave the highlighted grass in the foreground to balance the bright colors on the top-left side and to help tell the story. Some may find the grass distracting. What do you think?

A Moment of Connection
A young desert-adapted elephant gazes for a moment into my eyes. My heart leaps from the intimate moment, thinking that maybe in 10 or more years' time, when I again visit this river, it will recognize me. It may have been a fantasy thought, but the connection was real.

Hartmann's Mountain Zebra
One of two subspecies of mountain zebra is found in northern Namibia. It is listed as vulnerable with a population consisting of a few thousand. In northern Namibia, the plains zebra can also be found, forming large herds that migrate over long distances. In contrast, mountain zebras prefer rocky mountainous areas and form small family groups that engage in local elevation-based migration.

We were happy to come across a small group of Hartmann's Zebras, as it was our first sighting of this species. Finding it against a backdrop of mountains provided a good photographic opportunity, although the high sun and harsh light made for less-than-ideal conditions.

Dusty Moment
Our quest to find desert-adapted elephants in their natural habitat brought us to the Aba Huab River in Namibia. There is no guarantee that one will find these giants on a visit, as they roam over hundreds of kilometers up and down their favorite riverbed. We were blessed to find a scattered group of 17 elephants. Some were observed from a long distance, and we were able to get quite close to others without any sign of discomfort from the animal. Standing in the shade to avoid the 100-plus-degree weather, this female blew some of the cooler sand onto the underside and sides of her body to cool off from the radiating heat. I find the combination of trunk, tusks, and dust a synthesis of desert elephant essence - no other animal has both tusks and a trunk. Many animals have ears, legs, and tails, etc. By deliberately excluding the eye, I depersonalize the image, focusing the viewer's attention on these elements.

Progression
A series of exposures timed at constant intervals to show a partial progression of the lunar eclipse of 26/27 August as viewed from North Georgia. We were blessed to have mostly clear skies, which gave us excellent views of the celestial show.

Aug 27/28 2026 Lunar Eclipse
Last night's lunar eclipse at 96.2% obscurity was not a total eclipse. The bright sliver catching the full sun overpowered the red color usually seen when the moon is fully in Earth's shadow. A two-image composite, with one exposure for the shadow and the other for the highlight, provided a reasonable idea of the scene. A few stars on either side of the moon add a bit more authenticity.

Awakened
The first sun rays light up a red granite outcrop in Namibia's savannah near Spitzkoppe. The tranquility of early morning, with its still air and a few bird melodies, welcomes a new day in this vast landscape that will soon be drenched with hot African sunlight. While desert sings its dawn song, I as the observer of this whispering grassland can awaken and connect with the Creator.
