Over the years, there have been countless moments that have made me tear up behind my camera. When it’s a big event like a wedding or parent dance you can usually feel it coming and mentally prepare yourself. And then there are the moments that completely stop you in your tracks. Mid-session Nate (the dad) randomly asked me, “can I get a photo holding both of them at the same time? I just don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to do this.” I immediately pictured my 4-year-old son who is growing too quickly and said, “of course!” and then heavily relied on my auto focus for the next few shots. 🥹😭
Before having Riley, I would focus on the composition or the lighting. Now I focus on the connection above all else. The photography industry tends to obsess over the aesthetic- the golden light, cohesive color schemes, or picture perfect smiles for a Christmas card. But in the end none of that will matter. My portfolio, brand, and editing style will mean nothing. The moments of you together- loving deeply- will always be my most important work.
