Boeufalo

Early European explorers and fur trappers in the 1600s called the animals bœuf the French for beef or ox, because the shaggy beasts reminded them of cattle. Over time, that word evolved into "buffalo" in American English. Many Indigenous communities and historical traditions also use "buffalo" alongside traditional names like the Lakota word tatanka

We love coming to South Dakota and getting shots of the Bighorn Sheep. We were surprised by how many lambs are in this herd.

Fun fact: Ewes and their lambs gather in herds of 5 to 15 animals for protection and socializing.

(Windblown)- While these beauties prefer fresh fish, American Bald Eagles are opportunistic feeders that dont shy away from stealing prey or scavenging for an easy meal.

I'll never forget my birthday last year. Mat Custer asked what I wanted to do, naturally I chose to go to Loess Bluffs Wildlife Refuge to photograph the eagles. We braved the frigid cold and had the place almost completely to ourselves. We got some incredible shots but this one will always be one of my favorites.
I tell you what, birthday shots had a very different meaning when I was younger.
