🌷 pregnant & barefoot, in pajamas with an armload of flowers - me in a nutshell (just missing an iced latte in hand & three little boys tugging me in all different directions) 💫

it’s been a really long time (like years) since I did a little introduction on here, so I figured it was time. You won’t find AI captions round here - so buckle up for a long & probs goofy intro with quite a few grammatical mistakes (my bachelors degree is in early education, my grammar skills are sometimes best suited to preschoolers hehe)

I’m Katie (obvi) very few people actually call me Katie Jo, but it’s a name I treasure because Jo is my mom’s name who passed away when I was 13. Most of my memories of her live on in the photos of my childhood. Trust me when I say you will never regret the family photos. She blessed me with her love of photography & still inspires me with her art all the time. (Most of my film cameras came from her closet stash 🥲)

I’m a mommy (Mamacita? Happy almost love island season to all who celebrate!!) to *almost* four little boys !! I’m truly a professional chaos wrangler & my patience for kiddos is never-ending. My love for family sessions has only been made stronger by my own love of receiving a gallery full of memories with my own babies.

I met my husband at 15 and he’s been my best friend ever since. He spent every extra penny he had & bought me my very first camera ten years ago. Many years of training him behind the camera has paid off - he’s the one who took these pics of me!

I turned 30 last year, and with that I have felt a slight shift in life & work. This job has followed me through a LOT of different seasons & capacities. Of course, adding a fourth baby into the mix has something to do with it too - but I am looking forward to more of saying no to the things that don’t light me up, and more giant yeses to the things that do.

Whoo, if you made it this far - I owe you a coffee. Come on over anytime and I will be more than happy to fire up the Breville. In the meantime, say hi in the comments - I’m beyond happy you’re here. 🍀🐞🌼🌷

are you even best friends if you don’t make a 20 hour round trip drive just to spend the weekend together & get some updated family pics before another new baby joins our friend group so soon 💌

edited these through tears bc I can’t even believe how fast all of our kids are growing up & how hard it is to live so far away. A friendship over FaceTime & a few weekends a year is hard, but worth it. No matter how long it’s been, all of our kids mix together like it’s been no time at all 💫

V showed up with alllllll the two year old energy (and a little sprinkle of attitude) for this session 💛 his mom and dad kept the fun going while he made us all work for some pics (and sing a lot of wheels on the bus) and I loved every second of it. It’s so fun to get to see parents in their element all of the time, and capture some magic in the midst of it ✨ also give me all the yellow 🌼🐥🍋🧈

hi hi hi, its me - coming at you live from the McDonalds drive through because apparently being 30 weeks pregnant with my fourth baby means I can't drive an hour to a session without stopping for a little snack :)

I have been thinking so much lately about what photography means to me, and how grateful I am to be able to help provide for my family in a way that is so fulfilling and also allows for me to be a mom in a greater capacity than my 9-5 ever would have.

21 year old me was scared to death of failing or making a fool out of herself. She started all of this with a one year old on her hip and negative dollars in the bank. (and as a full time college student, phew) Just a girl with a camera, a dream, and a passion for people. I hope she'd be as proud of me now as I am of her.

it’s been almost a year since I first picked up a film camera (actually 5 haha)

my mom was the documentary photography queen - a camera always in hand and dozens of photo albums I love to skim through still. she died when I was only 13, so I’ve always known how precious photography is. getting to see her life through her photos is something I’ll never take for granted. A year ago I was looking at some of her pictures from her pre-kid traveling days & decided to go searching for some of her cameras. I found a stash in the back of a cabinet, and grabbed some film from Walmart. The rest is history.

I’m still a beginner that’s for sure, but it really is unlike anything else waiting for film scans to come back in. it slows you down, makes you appreciate light & movement & space more than ever before.

I’ve absolutely loved using film over the last year to capture family memories & some of my clients. It’s my hope to upgrade to a *not vintage* film camera later this year and start doing more professional work that way. For now though you can catch me at your session with my 30+ year old baddies.

you may not be as lucky as me in finding working cameras from your mom, but ask a family member or friends if they have any old ones in storage. Check local auction sites & thrift stores (or splurge on a reputable one online - you won’t regret it!)

I’m always an open book about anything and everything, so even though I’m a beginner feel free to ask anything at all 🫶🏻 and if you have any tips for beginning with film - leave them below. 💗

pov - you’re my friend & I text you and ask you if I can come over on a random overcast Tuesday morning & take some pics of you at home in the backyard with your babies so you have some really sweet pics with your babies to look back on this (chaotic) wonderful season of life 💫🍩🎈

when you’re questioning everything about your professional life but then you remember you literally have free will & can go outside with your babies whenever you want & take pictures of them wherever you want & edit them however you want & post whatever the heck you want 🤸‍♀️🙂‍↕️🐞🍀

nothing will remind you that it just really isn’t that serious like a snot nosed toddler demanding you take them “outshide to sfwing” with a baseball in hand while his brothers chase the chickens around the yard like a pair of herding dogs.

I love a good perfectly posed portrait of my kids as much as the next mom (and grandma) but THIS, runny nose and crazy hair, is what I’ll look back on one day and sob into my shirt - I’ll even be a little sad that it doesn’t have toddler snot on it anymore 😭😭😭

nostalgia pulses through my body ever single day, and I’m only nine years into this parenting gig. trying hard not to forget that the little things are the big things & the things that feel big (and stressful) will probably be forgotten by tomorrow after a long night of rolling around my bed like a rotisserie chicken.

what a cluckin good life I get to live 🐓 (love a good chicken pun, slide all the way over for a little surprise)

15 mins with the Albins 🤟🏼🦋🐛 our girl matching set of homeschooled friends (matching for 10 more weeks anyways hehe)

I love a slow paced at home session just as much as the next person, but I think there’s always room for mini session marathons too! I try to do them a couple times every season for the busy bees! 🐝

obviously results vary & you may not be guaranteed any toddler smiles (who needs those anyways, I love me an authentic mean mug) - but if it’s the best way for you to get yourself in the pics (I’m looking at you moms) then never feel bad about booking the marathon mini session 💗

some key differences if you wanna know -

Full sessions: an hour (sometimes more) much more laid back, able to get a lot more in between moments. You may think kiddos do better with mini sessions bc they have short attention spans, but honestly the longer session allows them to get really comfortable and us to learn their specific language and really get their personalities to shine.

Mini session -
fast paced & in your face a little bit haha I’m not sure how else to explain it but it’s the long form sessions louder sister. We keep it moving & capture the fleetingness of the moment. Sometimes it’s a little startling for kids, but usually it still goes really well (I have a Bach degree in early childhood education so I’d like to think I’m quick with *reading the room* and can get the most out of our time & any feelings going on)

moral of the story - there’s magic & good vibes in any length of session so long as you bring them along with you 💫

ps: my spring books are opennnnn can’t wait to see you all yay yay yay

on my way out the door to this session I told my husband “and don’t expect me back anytime soon!!!” upon my arrival, I was handed the sweetest new baby & a bottle while mom & dad finished getting ready. we sat to chat birth stories and thirty mins flew by before I realized we really needed to start taking some pictures hehe. clients who feel like lifelong friends though >>>>🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ there was an absolutely diabolical rainstorm going on outside for most of the session, but that had nothing on the sunshine on the inside. Love love love this fam & an extra shoutout to them for being the catalyst to ditch my boring beige era after our very first session together (3 years ago 🥲🧡🌈)
